Looking to help my uncle |

John Henning wrote on 2009-06-30 21:24:14.0
Comments: I'm looking to help my uncle, Sgt. Ronald (Royce) Richards of Detroit MI, get reconnected with friends from the 180th Regiment. They've just got a computer and he's giving it a try.
He was a .30/.50 cal machine gunner as part of H company, but was assigned to other companies along the line. He was pretty much in country for the whole period and returned through LA. He is rather reserved about his experiences, but it still is very clear, and dear to him. I'd like to motivate him to go to a reunion and hope that hearing from someone who he can relate to might get him to return to a reunion. He's a great guy and I think would enjoy comparing notes with any of you. He saw pictures on Richard Reahard's website that were looking at his positions or seeing things the same way he saw them. I'm working to get some of his photos scanned to share with any of you. I'd appreciate any input. I'd start by forwarding some messages to him, and hopefully he'd start responding and sharing his memories.
Thanks, John Henning

Comments: I am looking for any surviving members of the 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, who were with the unit when it crossed the Rhine and were with it as it advanced thru Biblis, Bobstadt and Gros Hausen in March 1945. The small Village of Einhausen (formerly Gros Hausen or Klein Hausen) are looking for information/photos of when the Battalion came thru their village. Historical records from the National Archives on the 180th Infantry Regiment show that the 1st Battalion was advancing thru the woods towards Bensheim when they came under fire from the visinity of Gros Hausen and they then called in for air and artillery support before moving in that night. Any information or photos of that event and their thoughts about the village would be preatly appreciated.

Comments: I am writing for the historical society of a small village in Germany who are looking for information or photos of the 180th Inf Reg's advance thru their village in late March, 1945. This village has hosted 100's of Army Bandsmen who have performed in the area since 1970 and also to students from the US who traveled to Germany with their German Language classes. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. The village is named Einhausen, however at the time, there were two towns called Gros Hausen and Klein Hausen. Gros Hausen is mentioned in at least one book because the unit entered thru the Gros Hausen side and that is probably why it is mentioned. Again any info or photos or another source of information on the 180th's advance thru this area would be greatly appreciated.

They Remain Silent |

Comments: My father, Donald Gould, (PA) served in 49th Love Company, Pork Chop Hill, Korea. And even though I am a Desert Storm Vet, he rarely spoke about his experiences. (He shared more with my sons, who presented him with a commemorative G.I. Joe holding a B.A.R., than he did with me.)
Dad carried a browning, and was one of the few from his platoon who walked off Pork Chop. I've learned more from other sources, than I would ever have learned from him.
For those of you seeking information about relatives' experience there, know that it was profound, that their service and sacrifice was exceptional, and be very proud. They remain silent for a reason.

Comments: My brother (Joe Cahill) was with the 180th from early 1953 on until separation from Army in Oct. 1954. My son is going to South Korea in 2 weeks and will tour the DMZ. Can anyone tell me where the 180th was deployed before the truce was finally signed? I remember my Father was ripping stories out of the newspaper so my Mother would not get upset which makes me suspect they were at Pork Chop Hill which was the big ongoing battle before the signing. Just do not know how to confirm such a hunch. Is there a source that explains the medals the soldiers received?
Thank you all for your service to our country.

Comments: My step father who is 81 and was awarded the bronze star with v for his actions on Pork chop hill In I believe it is spelled Sakkoe korea and is 81 is trying to find out about one man he helped who was wounded very badly and might have died as a result of combat on 10 July 1953.My stepfather s letter for the bronze star was awarded 27 October 1953 for leaving a foxhole in order to throw 2 hang grenades while under fire. They were trapped in a cave so he saved many lives that day.Tonight he asked me to find out if corporal cook survived and any information about either him or his family. At 81 it is pretty important to him.I've seen the bronze star withv and the letter which he was awarded after discharge from the service. He was a great husband to my mother who passed in 2004.Anyone remembering John I'd like to hear from and pass along to him your contact information. He is particularly interested if corporal ciik survived his wounds and what became of him.He is terrible with a computer so I am trying to help him find out.I hope by luck someone reads this that can help Thank you
