I would very much appreciate any help you can offer around receiving details about my father's time in Korea. My life has taken many strange turns over the years, none stranger than trying to cope with not knowing my father. Thank you for your detailed description of my dad's final months, and any other thoughts or memories you might have would be most appreciated. Warm regards, Pete

I've heard that he scored high marksmanship with a machine gun at a flying target before going to Korea. He was KIA not long after arriving in Korea (5/28/1951). I would like to know the circumstances under which he died. He was my uncle, the youngest of my grandmothers children. He was about 6'1" to 6'2", had red wavy hair and had a ruddy complexion. He liked to squirrel hunt and fish. He could shot the eye out of a squirrel in the top of hugh cypress trees. I have seen him snare 6' long gars from the Medina River while floating in a small canoe. e-mail me any info. about him. Thanks, George

There is a G.I standing in the foreground, and about a quarter of a mile away a line of Chinesse soldiers standing along the crest of Pork Chop. It was one of those large single (two?) page photos that Life used to do.

Can anyone tell me the exact date of this issue.

Thanks.

Comments: I am sorry to announce the passing of my father, PFC Ralph Clements, E Co., 2nd Bn., 17th RCT., 7th Inf. Div. on July 11, 2003.

He was well loved and respected by his family, friends and peers and will be sorely missed. My father rarely missed an opportunity to voice his opinion about things, especially those which adversely affected the military or veteran's affairs/benefits. The one exception being his tour in Korea. Unfortunately, It wasn't until his death, that I was able to gain some insight into his time in Korea. I recently, located a memoir that he had written concerning the campaign to secure Jane Russell, Sandy & Hill 598 on October 16th, 1952, in which he describes a 57mm Recoilless Weapons Squad, (Ralph Clements, James Pecanty-Shreveport,LA.,Bob Mossberg-Wash, PA., & Minm Hung Quo-South Korea), to subdue a chinese bunker on Jane Russell and his subsequent return to Ft. Ord, CA and an instructor, prior to his ETS.

If any has information or photographs about this incident or knew my father, please contact me at abnrgclements@aol.com.

Thank You,

R.G. Clements Jr.

Comments: Mr. Ernest J. Fannin of Lansdowne, Pa. has been in search of a warrant officer and a jeep driver whom he was riding with when he was injured. The warrant officer said he would put him in for a Purple Heart and for reasons not so selfish Mr. Fannin rejected the W/O's offer of a Purple Heart. They were inspecting faulty ammo at Forward Ammo Dump North of the 38th Parallel around the Iron Triangle Sector. Area came under fire and they were exiting area in a jeep, Mr. Fannin was in the back of the jeep and was hit. This was around Sept or Oct of 1952 and the warrant was in charge of the ammo dump. He mentions Ethiopians, faulty artillery, and he was taken to the forward Aid station by the w/o and the driver. If anyone has this information, knows of this incident and the names of the w/o or driver, please contact me at the email address provided, so I can forward info to Mr. Fannin. Thank you.

Comments: Got number of Charles Kidd off this site yesterday and spoke to him; the first time in 52 years! Just for the record, we were never known as the 17th Infantry Regiment while in Korea.

We were that in Sendai, Japan but they beefed us up with artillery and we went over in September as the 17th RCT . Sat in reserve in Pusan harbor. NKs so close we could see the flashes from our artillery. . Broke their full-court press with 1st Marines and our 31st and 32nd RCTÂ’s landing at Seoul. Then we, 17th RCT, swung around to West coast, landed at Iwon and drove to Hysesanjin on Manchurian border.

I would like info on how I can get his complete military records, and any other info anyone cares to share with me. He tossed his medals overboard on the way home;I assume he wanted to forget what he'd seen at the time, but now family members are interested and I think he regrets having done so.His memory is not good and I need help putting the story all together! Comments: This is a great site. My uncle Charlie was in the battle at Pork Chop Hill. Although he'll never talk about it, and I won't push him to, the story has fascinated me for many years. Gegory Peck's movie didn't help none either! I love that film! Tried to have a forum going on the battle in Yahoo Clubs but it was deleted sometime ago due to lack of interest. I'm trying again. I just started another one in Yahoo Groups. Also called Pork Chop Hill. Everybody is welcome. Looking for photos of Pork Chop Hill taken during the battle and as it is today. Has to be some. Anybody who has knowledge on this battle who can add info to the forum, please feel free to do so. Anybody with photos, please feel free to post them. It's open to anybody who has the interest. Veterans, historians, reenactors, artists, etc. It's been a while since I last chatted with you folks so I hope you all are well and had a great holiday season. I hope this Project is going well too. Appears to be. John

Comments: Would like to contact anyone who may have known my Uncle Sgt Earl Skelton, nicknamed "Bunny." A loud, boisterous man who loved to party, sing, and soldier. He was from Philadelphia, PA., a veteran of WWII (1st CIB)(North Africa (1stID, Sicily(1st ID), Normandy, 90th ID) and served with 17th Infantry in Korea (51-53). I believe he was assigned to A Company/17th Inf Regt where he earned his 2nd CIB. Was with 17th at Inchon, during withdrawal through Wonson, and although I am not sure I believe he was at Pork Chop Hill. A special soldier, went onto serve in Viet Nam with 4th ID in 1967, said he wanted to go because "those young guys needed his help." My inspiration, encouraged me to become a soldier and I persevered to rise to rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Infantry (41 years of service) to honor his memory. I too served with 17th Infantry Regt and 1st Bde 7th Div (66-67)as an Infantry LT. Would like to speak with at least one or two who might shed some light on the most interesting man I have ever known, and the great men he served with in that desolate and harsh part of the world. Am now in Jacksonville NC and have contact with many USMC veterans of Chosin, et al. I am a historian and would appreciate any responses/inquiries. Can I help anyone else? Regards to all Korean Vets on this 11th of Nov 2001. They call it a "Forgotten War,".....not forgotten by me.

Comments: My dad, Sylvester Romett, is looking for Lt. Baxter A. Valtz. He was in the 7th Infantry, 17th Regiment, Company A in Korea around 1951.

After 50 years of complete silence about the Korean War, my dad has finally been able to talk to his kids about it.

From what I can gather, many in the Company were killed and Lt. Valtz helped save my dad's life. We all would like to find him and thank him.

He was a wonderful, fun-loving guy who worked with horses before he went in the service. I think of him often, but only now discovered this web site.
