Dan Villarreal wrote on 2000-09-26 22:38:58.0

Comments: I'm not positive of my dad's exact unit designation, but I believe it was B 2/17th. He was a WWII vet in his 2nd war (Korea) as a volunteer. His war buddy, Jack Wick, speaks highly of him as a good guy to have around--career combat guy amongst draftees like Jack. Some stories I'm chasing (ref. my dad, SFC Carlos NMI Villarreal, US Army, deceased Jan. 69): a possible Silver Star (may be from his WWII time w/34th Inf. Div.); punching out a 2LT in front of a company that "didn't see a thing!" (may be WWII--at any rate, Statute of Limitation's expired, so go ahead and tell the MPs!); stepping on a severely underpowered land mine (noise, EXTREMELY minimal damage--minor treatment at the aid station). I followed in this Buffalo's footsteps and became an Infantry officer, reaching the rank of Major--graduated from The Citadel, Airborne & Ranger Schools. I would love to hear from friends of my dad & Jack Wick's. Jack's in Sacramento, California, as a (retired?) nurseryman. God Bless all you lightfighters and Buffalos! Hoo-AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Raymond P. Gallagher wrote on 2000-09-04 10:34:11.0

Comments: I am named after my Uncle who was killed in July 1953 near Sohkogae DMZ.

I believe the battle was for Pork Chop Hill.

He was a guest of the enemy POW until they were all buried in a shallow grave. He was one of 28 found. His body came home just after my Parent's wedding. I was born in 1955.

I would like to know if anyone remembers him or can tell me about what happened. Since he was only 21 and not married, I, and now my son are carrying his name in memory.

He did his training at Camp Breckenridge, Ky. before being assigned to a rifle company.

He was with Easy Company, 17th Infantry Regiment (although the news clippings I have said it was the 17th Reg. Combat Team), Seventh (7) Division.

I do have a picture of him in uniform.

The strange thing is he is wearing the Screaming Eagle patch of the 101 Airborne.

Any help would be aprreciated

Back in 1990, I helped Pascall McGuiness to fund the Korean War Memorial down in Battery Park New York. Unfortunately, I coulndn't make the dedication.

Please ask around during your reunion. I know my Dad, like myself, would love to know.... the good, the bad,....and the indiferent.

Thank you

Raymond P. Gallagher

Trying to contact former unit mates who might remember the action in which I was WIA by White Phosphorus grenade that two NK threw back at me on the hill.

I broght them back down to debrief and aid station where we were processed.

I went to Rgt aid station and then to a MASH unit with Donald Dalton, also WIA.

I have not been able to get my Purple Heart from Korea due to lack of Aid Station or MASH records available to determine. The VA and NPRC have contd to say there is no record.

Needing help from unit members to establish.

After Korea, served in Vietnam also.

Comments: I inadvertantly indicated that my father, 2nd Lowell Mason Jr. had served in Korea in 1951-52. In fact, having just found some of his military records, it turns out that he served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was assigned to the 17th from late 1952 until he was wounded on the front face of Pork Chop Hill early in the morning on 12 June 1953. Anyone who knew him or a SGT Kent M. Bird or a PFC Gaetano P. Nicastro; I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Also, if anyone has any photos or other copyable memorabilia, I would like to hear from you. Sincerely yours, LCDR Rob Mason

Comments: My father was a platoon leader in late 1951 or early 1952. He was leading a squad down the front face of Pork Chop Hill when they were ambushed by Chinese/nK troops throwing grenades and shooting small arms fire. My father called for the squad to retrograde, though I'm not sure if all members made it back. He was seriously wounded and left the unit to convalesce in Japan a short time later. He received the Silver Star for his actions to cover and assist his men back to safety. My father died of cancer almost ten years ago. He never spoke of the war and my knowledge of his service is based solely on the (slim) accounts of relatives and his medal citation. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who knew my father and could share any information of their time in Korea with him and the unit. I am in the Navy and stationed in Korea. If I can help anyone please email me or call me. Thanks and God Bless.

Comments: I am an NCO at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and I work on a range called "Porkchop Hill". I am trying to put together a small museum for new soldiers that come to our range. I am looking for detailed drawings or a photo or two of the outpost, a personal account of someone there, a story from someone who knew PVT Charles Barker (MOH), How many people was the outpost designed for, etc.. Anything would be a help. I am doing this on my own for soldiers past and present.

Comments: Dear Hal, After posting a message, I've gotten much help from Sgt Ed puplava, I&R Pl. 17th Regt. He has sent me Pictures of Pork Chop Hill and vicinity. Also a panoramic sketch of the Yokokkchon Valley. These show definitly that my old outfit G Co 8th Cav Regt occupied the hill now known as Pork Chop in Oct Nov Dec 1951.

A battle was fought there on Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 21, 1951 and the Medal of Honor awarded to Lt. James Stone of F Co. 8th Cav Regt. Some terrible events happened on that hill.

MANY THANKS for all the help, Pfc John Krull
