Comments: Hi My brother in law died a couple of months ago and we had a beautiful military funeral, but now the family is looking to hear from anyone who was in army in korea with him. We know there is more to what we know, which is practically nothing. Tom would not talk about all his heroic efforts in Korea. We hope there are people out there that might have info to share with us. I am doing this on behalf of his wife and children. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank You!!

Comments: I was writing this message for my grandfather, William (Bill)W. Goodwin who passed away April 22, 2009 from cancer. He was wounded on Nov.17th. 1950 in Korea and spent ten years in the Army. Although he didn't talk about it much, he was a very humble man and raised our family the best way he could. We never went without. He was loved by us very much and will be dearly missed. His scarifices along with the others who paid the highest cost for our freedoms will never be forgotten by me. I'm dedicating my service in Iraq to his honor when I leave in March 2010. God Bless all who have served and are going to serve. Freedom is not free!

Did you know Corporal James Hensley? |

Darryl Hensley wrote on 2009-08-03 07:27:44.0
Comments: Looking for anyone that served with CPL James Hensley. a Squad Leader with Company F, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, on December 19, 1950, near Hungnam, Korea. Need eye witness statements of his Distingusihed Service Cross Action. Need to also verify that CPL James Hensley was from Clay County, Kentucky. Lived in Titusville, Florida until he passed away in 2000.
Corporal Hensley, James Army Distinguished Service Cross
Corporal James Hensley U.S. Army
Co. F, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division Date of Action: December 19, 1950
Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is awarded to Corporal James Hensley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as a squad leader with Company F, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, on December 19, 1950, near Hungnam, Korea. Elements of his company were deployed in a series of strongpoints approximately nine hundred yards apart defending the perimeter around the Port of Hungnam. Corporal Hensley observed a large hostile force approaching his position through a pass at approximately 0300 hours. Awakening and alerting the members of his squad, and instilling confidence that they could contain the attack, Corporal Hensley waited until the enemy had advanced within thirty yards and, manning a machine-gun, delivered point-blank fire into their ranks, inflicting many casualties. Although subjected to intense small-arms, automatic-weapons, and recoilless rifle fire and knowing the strongpoints on both sides had been overrun, Corporal Hensley refused to abandon his vantage point. On several occasions, hostile troops succeeded in crawling nearby and hurled grenades at his position, one of which grazed his hand, but undaunted, he remained steadfast and exacted a heavy toll of casualties throughout each assault. After nearly an hour of bitter resistance, during which he turned his weapon around twice to deliver destructive fire on enemy groups who had infiltrated on both flanks, Corporal Hensleys machine-gun became defective and failed to fire automatically. Applying instant action, he continued to fire single rounds manually until the weapon become inoperative. With his machine-gun out of action and a dwindling supply of carbine ammunition, he ordered a withdrawal and, struggling with his heavy weapon to deny its possible use to the attacking enemy, he fearlessly led his squad up the ridge line toward the last known position of the strongpoint on his left flank, stopping twice to fight his way through pockets of infiltrating enemy. Corporal Hensleys valorous conduct and intrepid actions resulted in numerous hostile wounded and, after the position was retaken later in the morning, approximately forty enemy dead were found in the wake of his field of fire.

Comments: Hello, I'm seeking to contact any 17th Infantry Regiment Veterans who may have known Pvt. Perley L. Burdick, # ER22810252, from Washington County, Rhode Island, & recalls which Company of the 17th he was assigned to. He was twice WIA while serving with the 17th Infantry, once on Feb. 27, 1951, & again on August 31, 1951. If anyone can recall Pvt. Burdick, or perhaps provide me with an idea of where the 17th Inf. was on the above mentioned dates, and what their mission was, I would be most appreciative. I am especially interested in determining which Company of the 17th he was assigned to, for without his Co. assignment, it's very difficult to pinpoint his actual position(s) when he was wounded. If anyone has ANY information pertaining to the above,I will be MOST DEEPLY APPRECIATIVE if they would contact me at: dpast32@aol.com THANK YOU
Regards, Dom Pastore Jr.

Comments: Then LTC Phillip D. Grimm was our Bn Co from 68-69 at Camp Kaiser, Korea till he went to 7th ID G-3. Col. Grimm was a leader in every sense of the word. Col. Grimm was a platoon leader in 51-52 in the 17th and then came back to command the first Bn in the 68-69 time period. We have a large write up about Col. Grimm on the 17th Infantry web site. I attended his services at Arlington Cemetary and finally got to meet his family whom I felt I already knew fromn serving with Col. Grimm years ago. Our country is lucky to have had the services of Phil Grimm for all those years of Infantry service.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew my Dad. His name was Earl Pugsley. He was a corporal in the US Army in Korea. He and his unit got a write-up in Stars and Stripes for breaking up a "red ambush north of Yong Wol". He was 21 years old when he came home from Korea. He was from Fresno, CA. He was in the Korean War in 1951 (probably, we don't have exact dates). Thanks for any responses, and especially, pictures you're willing to share.

comments: I am looking for anyone who served with my father, PFC Edward Dunnigan. He was in E Co. I'm not sure which Bn. but he said it was known for making it all the way to the Yalu. Initially, he was assigned as a sniper but later on was reassigned as a BAR man just in time for Pork Chop Hill. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Regrettably, he has passed away, but I remember one story; They were about to go out on patrol, led by a guy from Hawaii (Anthony Hayakawa?). Dad said that he was one of the toughest men he ever saw. He stood in front of the squad, armed with a Thompson SMG, a .38 in a shoulder holster, and a .45 in a hip holster and said while pointing at each man, "If I get hit, you're in charge, if he gets hit, you're in charge..." when he finally got to dad he said, "...and if it gets down to you, RUN!" That's the moment when dad said that he knew that this was serious.

Company outpost in which they lost nearly a full platoon including my good friend Clarence T. Halladay who was never accounted for. The month of December 1952 we spent on the island of Kojo-Do off Pusan chasing prisoners, then returned to Chorwon where we spent a lot of time laying concertina wire on Pork Chop. Lots to talk about- let me hear from you.

Comments: Recently received a Feb. Mar 2007 issue of the Buffalo Bugle. Surprised to see a picture of Philip D. Grimm who just happed to be our platoon leader the first part of 1952. Does anyone out there remember the patrol that we brought back a dead Chinese soldier. We had probably carries him a mile and before we went up into the CP (an unnamed individual)_ wanted two of the guys from the patrol to hold up this dead Chinese soldier up so he could have a snapshot picture taken along side of him. Sgt Rozanski stepped in and reminded him that this would not be tolerated as we had to have respect for this dead soldier. I believe the rest of the patrol would have followed old Rossy to hell and back. Rossy was certainly an unsung hero that had the respect of the entire patrol I realize this is a downer but it's one of those old memories that still linger in this old soldiers mind. Some true stories are never told. Jack Reynolds

Comments: I'm looking for members of Eye Company, 3rd Battalion, 17th Infantry (Capt. Roy Harms, CO), who fought around Hill 851 near Chu-pa'ri in late Aug and early Sep 1951.
If you knew my father, 2Lt. Dan Murphy from Watsonville, California, who was the FO assigned to your unit by Btry C, 49th FAB, drop me a line.
His grand-daughters are interested in finding out about who he was and how he died; since I was born after his death, I can't tell them much about it.

Comments: Any one listed as missing in action 6 - 12 Jul 1953 on Pork Chop hill was put into that MIA by the U.S. Air Force B-29's dropping 2000 LB Bombs on a small outpost no bigger than a city block by order of Gen. Treudue CG 7th Inf Div. The simple fact is, he destroyed all remains forever. I was eye wittness to that carnage and distroying of all remains. There are 112 MIA that will never be recovered because of Gen. Treadue.

Comments: Because of the limits of the numbers of Congressional Medal of Honor winners, my Uncle Col. Wiley McGarity did not receive the CMH, but the DSC. I would like to get him the CMH, as both he and my aunt having failing health. How would I go about that? His citation reads:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Wiley McGarity, First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. First Lieutenant McGarity distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces at Paengma-gol, Korea, on 1 September 1951. On that date, Company F, in defensive positions on a strategic hill, was viciously attacked at approximately 0200 hours by an estimated three hundred ruthless hostile forces supported by automatic-weapons and grenade fire. After the enemy penetrated a company position on the west end of the hill, inflicting heavy casualties and gaining control of key terrain, Captain McGarity, armed only with a pistol and several grenades, braved withering small-arms and automatic-weapons fire and, launching a one-man assault against the fanatical assailants, killed approximately six hostile soldier before his ammunition was expended. Although wounded by grenade fragments, he grabbed abandoned enemy grenades and a discarded carbine and continued to pour deadly accurate fire into enemy positions until the ammunition was exhausted. Then, seizing a trenching tool, he closed in hand-to-hand combat, killing two more hostile soldiers. Maintaining his magnificent stand, he inflicted such sweeping destruction that the enemy broke off the engagement and when friendly troops reached the area, he was hurling grenades at the retreating force. His inspirational, intrepid actions exacted a toll of approximately thirty enemy dead and as a result of his incredible display of valor the vital strongpoint was re-secured. The Army has been so helpful they even tracked me down 1500 miles from my last address to get a DNA sample and sent Incident reports, maps and one of his medals. When I first started this search I really thought it would take years to find out anything but was pleasantly surprised. And thank you to the retired pilot who had flown in Korean who called from California with helpful advice. Sorry I lost your number in my recent move.

Comments: After graduating from BIOC and the Army Ranger School in March 1956, as a 2nd Lt., I was assigned to the 17th Infantry Regt., George Company, as a Rifle Platoon Leader. I was subsequently assigned as Regt'l Asst. S-1, Courts & Boards Officer, after getting two successive acquittals in Special Courts Martial, by the CO, Col. Glenn Gardner, under Maj. Wolfinger, the then S-1.
As many of you may already know, I have been working on a video documentary of the 17th Infantry in the Korean War since October 2005, having announced same at the 2005 reunion of the 17th Infantry Assn. in Columbus, GA. Much of my research and video clips can be seen at my website at www.legaleagleproductions.com which includes streaming video clips, stories and photographs. My wife and I have done numerous interviews around the country of 17th Infantry Korean War vets, having just gathered much material at the Army War Museum in Carlisle, PA.
We are looking for veterans of the Korean War from the 17th who wish to tell their story on camera to preserve it for their children and grandchildren. This is a non-commercial venture, and is being done to preserve the history of the regiment in Korea for posterity.
We are also looking for any photographs and/or film taken during the Korean War to be used in the project. The project is expected to take upwards of two years, and the documentary will have a preliminary screening at the 2006 reunion of the 17th Infantry Association in Colorado Springs, CO, this coming Setember; and will likely have its world premiere at the 2007 reunion of the Association.
Please feel free to contact us by phone, letter or e-mail. We look forward to hearing from you. Your video interview will ultimately be contributed to the Army War Museum where you will become a part of military history.

I was given custody of my uncle's Army uniform jacket with all insiginias attached inlcuding his 7th Inf. Division patch, brass infantry lapel pins, and a pin on each shoulder of a badger-like animal with the words "Pro Patria" on them. Would love to know more about my uncle to allow me to tell his story to my children and to my tour groups. I am a DC tour guide who does trips for student groups from 8th - 12th grade. 99% of these students are totally clueless about the Korean War and I take that opportunity to tell them about it. If anyone of you knew my uncle, please give me a shout.
Lastly, thank all of you veterans for your serice to our country. You are very much appreciated.

Comments: My friend at work, Richard Patton, originally of Oklahoma and now of Houston, Texas, tells me that he served in B Company, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, during the landing at Inchon (among other places). If anyone here remembers him, or can provide me any other information on the engagements the aforementioned units served in, I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you for your time, effort, and service!

Also am looking for pictures of him if at all possible. I know he was stung by Man of War jellyfish and was wounded by shrapnel in the leg(?) I also would like to know the medals that are received during this period. I really miss my dad and this is all I know about his service time. I do know he rode in a jeep with a man who he reconized yrs later that had an article wrote about him saving a bunch of soldiers lives. It was in stars and stripes mag. Would like to find that article. Thanks and God Bless all that have served our country. Lisa

He served in the army from 1951 to 1954. His name is Edward Earnest Howard. He came home with a handful of medals, yet he never opened up to anyone about how he achieved them. I have no other information on where he served or with who, but I would like to know how he earned all of these medals. He was the only father I knew and it means a lot to find out more about him in his army days.

Comments: I'm looking for any stories, memories of my Dad's outfit. His name is Malburne Williams, from Michigan. He served with the 17th Regiment, 7th Division. He was in King Company, 2nd Platoon, 2nd Squad. He was on Jane Russel Hill with heavy casualties, then later another hill he doesn't remember, where they were relieved by Ethopian troops, and then in the second battle of Pork Chop. He carried a BAR, and has no idea what happened to his helper, an African-american guy. He also recalls seeing a movie about Pork Chop Hill, (not the one with Gregory Peck). He is now a quadraplegic as a result of a hunting accident in 1988. Went through two fierce battles figting at night hand to hand, and was uninjured through all of that.

You see, he was engaged to my mother Jannis Christopher and died with my baby picture in his front pocket next to his heart. I was born in December 1952 and he was killed in April 1953. The way I understand it, he kept volunteering for more and more dangerous missions so he could come home sooner. His plan was to come home and be my father, as my own father all but abandoned us. His memory has haunted me my whole life. I miss him every day. My mother by some coincidence married a man with the same last name (his cousing I think) years later, so at least I have always carried his last name. If anyone knows ANYTHING about him or could help me locate his family or a picture of him I would be eternally grateful. He died in the first battle at Pork Chop Hill April 18, 1953

Comments: I have searched for the truth as to what happened to my brother, SFC Marvin Rodman."K" Co& 3rd Btn had over 40% casualties,so,on paper he was put in"L"Co,BUT it was in rear lines. He was in heavy combat- all in his unit supposedly came off Hill#598-he was not with them. He was reported to have been wounded &in a Hospital in Japan- that was never proven.
It took 5 Cablegrams from Congressman Earl Wilson to get him declared MIA as of Oct 20,1952. The Army keeps records as to meals & movies BUT they could not keep track of my brother.
I have contacted Congressmen, Senators, Generals, Presidents, & others with contacts in the Pentagon or The Pentagon trying to find out what actualy happened to Marvin. The Army can not or will not tell us what actually happened to him.
The Army just quite simply lost him- he was declared KIA as of Dec 31,1953.No doubt just to cover their tails as for sure someone knows the truth as to what happened to Marvin.
If anyone knows anything or knows someone who does PLEASE let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi. I was with the 7th from September 1951 to June 6th, 1952. joined
them on Heartbreak. Was at The Punch Bowl, Porkchop, Iron Triangle
to name a few.
I was a photographer assigned to Hdqs Co. 17th.
Our Colonel was John Hightower and then another guy, I can't remember
his name now, but he was shorter.
I took some pictures up on Heartbreak where the Gooks had a large
banner pulled across some stump trees which directed a GI in a trench
thinking about his girl in the arms of another. They played favorite
American music and spoke on the loudspeakers about how futile this
war was etc.
I have lots of pictures of those days. My Lt. of the PIO office was
James D. Callahan of Torrence, Cal. We had a ball together.
Charlie Company...hum...I remember one time you guys got clobbered up
there on the ridge. I guess it happened more than once. I took
pictures right up there of some guys who received the Bronze Star for
valor.
Take care. Talk to you later.

Anyone who served with A Co.17th R.C.T. April 1951 January 1952 drop
me a note. I was in the first plt. first Sqd.
Was wounded June 11, 1951 on hill 601 and was in 279th Gen. Hospital in
Japan near Tokyo and Osaka until September and then returned to my same
Co. Plt. and Sqd. I don't have contact with anyone I served with.
I attended the 17th reunion in Fort Smith but didn't get to San Deigo
This year. Also missed Peoria, Il. last year. I hope to go to
Columbus, Ga. next year for it.

Maybe you can help me with one period of time. I was assigned as
artillery liaison officer to the 2nd Bn, 17th Inf. Regt. (date needed),
and we made a very rapid advance to the Yalu River on the Korean/
Manchurian border. I would like to know the name of the Infantry Bn.
Commander, and the name of the town we advanced to on the Yalu river.
I think we waited there for forces to come up on our left flank which
never happened due to the Chinese entering the war at that time. We
were subsequently ordered to retreat to the Hungnam/Hamhung area where
we set up a perimeter defense and eventually deployed by sea back to
Pusan.
If that Bn. Commander is still alive I would sure like to get in touch
with him the name of the CO of the 2nd Bn 17th Inf. Regt. was Lt. Col.
Denzil Baker.
Regards, Carroll.

I would like to know the address of a true war hero, and third timer in
korea, Sfc.Edvert Gaskins.,last known address was Russell Springs KY,
where he lived and ran a dental lab.
Sfc Gaskins led our patrols each evening, for the 1st.platoon of K co.
17th inf.reg. During the spring of 1953 and with his expertise helped
form the snooper scope. he prevented the loss of many lives. later on
Edvert was re-assigned to a ranger type platoon, and stepped on a land
mine, damaging his legs.Cpl. Pop Wright and myself were taken,by jeep
from the front lines,to see Sfc Gaskins in the hospital.
anyone knowing of his where-abouts, please submit same.
thank you,

Dear Mr. Barker:
If you are interested, here is the citation for actions for which he was
promised a MOH recommendation:
Corporal Fred B. McGee, US 52146660, Infantry Army, served as a member
of Co. K, 17th infantry, distinguished himself by gallantry in action
near Pang wan Ni Korea, 16 June 1952, during an assault on enemy
fortified positions on Hill 528. As gunner on a light machine gun in a
weapons squad, Corporal McGee delivered a heavy volume of supporting
fire from an exposed position.
Though forced to move his gun several times, he continued to support the
assault and give covering fire to the assault elements. When his squad
leader was wounded, he assumed command of the squad and moved to a more
exposed position in order to deliver neutralizing fire on an enemy
machinegun sweeping the other assault platoon with deadly flanking fire.
When his machine gunner was killed, he again took over the gun and
delivered deadly fire on enemy positions. On the order to withdraw, he
voluntarily remained behind to assist in the evacuation of the wounded
and dead. Though wounded himself, he heroically exposed himself to
intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire to assist his wounded and dead
comrades.
The gallantry and courageous actions of Corporal Fred B. McGee reflect
great credit upon himself, and are in keeping with the highest
traditions of the military service. Entered the Federal Service form
the State of Ohio.
The Dept of the Army instead awarded the Silver Star. Thank you again
for your interest. The best to you in all your endeavors.

I am trying to find a soldier that saved my dad's life in Korea. My dad
is in poor health, and has asked me to try my hand at finding him. I
have exhausted traditional means of search to this point.
The soldier's name is Maurice Jones (7th Division, 17th Infantry Regt,
"Dog" Company), and he was a heavy 30 caliber machine gunner in 1953.
I believe his last known residence to be Dallas, but am not sure. If
you are able to get in touch with him, he would surely know my dad,
Douglas Fisk.
I thank you in advance for your assistance with my endeavor. It will
mean much to my dad if I can find Mr. Jones.

Hi,
My father asked me to place this advertisement at an appropriate place.
Anyone remember Renald Iacovelli? He was evacuated for illness.
Any information is appreciated.
Name: Renald Iacovelli
Time of Service: Well, he was evacuated he says in July or August or
1951. He was with the 7th Division, 17th Infantry Regiment, Company G,
1st Platoon.
He also says that on the day he was evacuated, two men died, one of whom
was a certain Benitez, the other whose first name was "Walter" and had a
Polish last name. I have searched for Benitez, and there is one listed
as belonging to this regiment and division and killed on 20 MAY 1951,
but my father thinks this is too early, since he is certain he was
evacuated a month or two later.
