Comments: I'm working in the archives at Central Washington University and have just received a book called the Seven Story Mountain by Thomas Merton from the Thorp (Washington) Historical Society with a stamp in the back that says "Property of U.S. Army, Hospital Library, 172nd Station Hospital, A.P.O. 547." It looks like the book was checked out heavily from 1950 to 1952. It also looks like the book was fire damaged. I'm interested in learning more about the hospital and if anyone had any experiences with the library there.

Comments: I was stationed in Camp Sendai, Camp Schimmelpfennig (Schimm) from 1954 - 1956. While at Camp Sendai I was taken to the Army hospital downtown for a kidney stone attack. I spent several days there. The building itself was the Japanese Postal (Employees) Insurance Building and I have photos of it then. The US Army took over the building and it was used as a headquarters building and a hospital until it was returned to the original owners. It is still standing and has been completely remodeled. I have a number of photos of it before and after as well as photos of people stationed there. They are on my website about Sendai. Go to www.sendai-shi.com to see them. Will also display your photos with your name if you are interested. Just follow the submission guidelines on my website.

Comments: an addition to my entry yesterday,2005-07-02. Late yesterday I received notice that Before the U.S.Occupation of Japan That the 172nd. Station Hospital was a japanese postal insurance building. The building now belongs to the Japanese and is completely renovated. The building was returned to the original owners. The building in 1945 was the only suitable building for 9th Corp. Headquarters, Because Sendai Was flattened by our b-17s and b-29s. Go to abe lincolns, Sendai-Shi. He knows more about Sendai Than any one I know. Donald Wood.

Comments: I have found some history of the 172nd. Station Hospital. WW2, China. WW2 Australia. 1947 Sendai, Japan. But before the 172nd. Sta. Hosp. This building was used in 1946 as 9th. Corp. Headquarters until they moved the headquarters to Camp Sendai. I was stationed at the 172nd. Sta. Hosp. From May, 1949 to August 1951. Then I found positive evidence that in 1954 The same building became the8166th. Army Hospital Then in 1956 the same building was the 11th. Evacuation Hospital. So the 172nd. Sta. Hosp. Was moved or deactivated circa-1953. Donald Wood.
