Comments: Moved to Oak View Ca. from Oak Harbor WA. This year. Transferred to the Ojai VFW. Met Commander Dave Pressey (F-Co 160inf 40th Div) Who I last saw in a forward outpost overlooking Kumsong, Korea. April or May 1952. My heavy machine-gun section was supporting F-Co with 2-30's & 1-50. Dave introduced me to the VFW members as the guy who made the hair stand up on the back of his neck whenever I opened up with the 50. Thought we were going to be overrun several times but we beat them back. Can't say enough about how tough the Fox Co guys were. A lot of WW2 X-Marine Sgts in F-Co. A guy in Pressey's squad tried to bug out but he crawled back in his hole when Pressey said " you run & I'll shoot". Thats how it was when we were 19 & 20 years old. Ed Marshall

Comments: When I was wounded in Korea I lost all my personal belongings i.e. family pictures, letters, etc. My personal belongings, including money were never returned to me. I spent several months recovering in Army hospitals in Battle Creek, Michigan and Walter Reed, in Washington, D.C. When I was separated from service, I asked about my lost personal belongings and never received a reply.

In addition, I never received my medals, ribbons, etc. except for my Purple Heart and CIB.

I would be interested in receiving any information possible about my unit and the circumstance surrounding my wounding. I would also like to learn how I can replace any medals, ribbons, etc. to which I am entitled.

I know its been a long time since I served in Korea, but I would like to gather as much information as I can, to pass on to my children and grand-children.

Sincerely,

David T. Mohler papamammo@buckeye-express.com

HOMEWARD BOUND

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
ROBERT ERICSON wrote on 2000-12-22 11:40:10.0

Comments: The following was published aboard the USNS Gen. N.M. Walker, departing Pusan harbor 20 Jun 53, arriving Camp Stoneman, Ca 1 Jul 53. This poem was written in a spirit of closure on a difficult yet significant part of our lives. It is my hope that anyone who reads this will recall the feelings shared on this return trip.

Three thousand soldiers on the deck, With just one thought in mind, We'll soon be home with those we love, sharing a joy sublime. The ocean stretched out before us, The future we did not know, Would we make this trip in a peaceful calm, Or would the storm winds blow? At last we'd crossed the open sea, We could see our country's shore, And we wondered why anyone ever had asked, "What are we fighting for?". Had the Golden Gate been built of gold, and a pearl on every wave, We couldn't have been more proud to return, to the home of the free and the brave. Three thousand soldiers on the deck, With a prayerful thought in mind, "God bless the boys who gave their all, The ones we left behind". Cpl. Bob Ericson

L platoon sergeant opened a package from home and found a pair of flaming red pajamas. While modeling them in the doorway of his bunker, a sniper across "No Man's Land" began to take pot shots at him. Refusing to abandon the night-wear, he yelled,"With these PJ's I feel like I'm back in Pittsburgh." Looks like the GI's from Pittsburgh are pretty tough!!! AMEN..

Comments: The following is excerpted from "THE FIRE BALL" newspaper, dated April 10, 1953. (Not very GI)

FIREBALL, THE BEST OF ALL

From the shores of the South Pacific, To the rocky Korean hills, The fame of the 40th Division, Pride in our hearts instills.

The artillery, the mortars, the engineers, The riflemen medics and tanks, All work together in peace or in war, With a union found rarely in ranks.

The 40th is a fighting Division, Wherevever may be the call, The boys to the left and the boys to the right, Know the Fireball's best of all.

Comments: Just read Rdoug66729@aol.com account of the medic brothers on Heartbreak Ridge. I had a similar experience upon joining my medical unit in Jan. 1953. These boys were from Calif. I believe and the Stars & Stripes wrote "The sun is setting tonight, on a hill above the sea, on the grave of a medic who was buried by his brother." I was being introduced around the company, Captain Petrone, Capt Barrone, Sgt. Carlson, Sgt Furukawa (the chicken sexer from Cleveland) but was told "lets not go into that tent right now, a medic in there just lost his brother medic. We were in reserve in Chun-Chon, I believe. Is this a coincidence or have we got dates and places mixed up.
