What battles or hills was my dad involved with? |

Jim Davidson wrote on 2009-02-22 11:21:40.0
Comments: My father was in Korea from approx 2/52 to 6/53 with 3rd ID company C/HQ 15th Inf Regiment. He never really spoke to much about Korea other than how cold it was over there and things were rather tough. He recently passed away and I found a bronze star order that was awarded after he left Korea.
He did tell me that he was wounded in early 1952 and shipped to Japan. I can't find the order for this purple heart or his 1st CIB. When he was shipped back he was assigned to drive for Maj John D. Eisenhower until leaving Korea. This was around Oct. 1952
Can someone provide information on battles or hills he might have been involved with? (i.e Outpost Harry, etc) Since his DD214 is not accurate and this information was destroyed in the fire is their other information or way to get the purple heart and CIB.
He also served in Vietnam in 25th ID where he was wounded and medically retired.

Comments: Freddie Martin of Palestine Texas serve in the Korean War in 1952-1953 (?) in Chorwon Valley near an area he refers to as (3) rivers. He's not sure if that's the actual name of the area (3) rivers but certainly what he and his unit named it. Freddie Martins records were destroyed in the 1973 fire; his personal records reflect that he entered into the Army in December 1952 and serve in the Korean War shortly thereafter. If you remember Freddie (Shorty), Jerry Mims or Curly Young in Co H, 3rd Div Inf, 15th Reg., please contact me at 817-996-5813.
Keywords: Freddie's nickname is Shorty. He remembers (2) of his friends Jerry Mims and Curly Young.

Comments: Looking for anyone who knew my Dad. He was in the 15th Infantry-Company 1-3rd Division. He always tells us he was on the "line" and he used to always sing to the enemy. His nickname is "Cacina". Not sure if he used it in Korea. Was in a night assault on 4/12/1952 which his company all got letters of recommendaton for combat action signed by Commanding Colonel Infantry William Moore. He comes from Brooklyn, NY. Also said he peeled alot of potatoes. Thanks

Comments: My father, a Korean war vet 296th infantry/3rd Division 15th regiment needs one of his buddies to come forward and acknowledge his service and exposure to the battle field. I have been trying to help my dad get the awards that he deserve for being at the front line were he sustianed a injury to his head during incoming enemy fire.
DOD only shows him at the first phase of induction to the 296 infantry, but strangely enough they do not show any records of him being in the 3rd division 15 regiment at Kelly Hill. Ofcourse like many of our soldiers from that era he has been turn down for medals, pensions, Etc only because DOD has lost his medical records which would prove that he was wounded in combat. My father is in his final days, I refuse to see him go without recognition of his sacrifice to this nation. Please contact us with any info that might help him. Thank you, Jesse velez

Info on Sidney Edward Johnson |

 |
Jason Johnson wrote on 2005-02-14 00:00:00.0
Comments: I am looking for any and all information regarding my grandfather, Sidney Edward Johnson. He grew up in Aiken, South Carolina. According to a copy of his "Form 66--Officer Qualification Record," he would have been either a 1st Lt or WOJG (his records indicate a resigned commission, though he was later an officer again; I believe he resigned his commission in order to get out of administration and back in a combat platoon) in "Co H 15th Inc FECOM" during Korea. His earlier service included survival of the attack on Pearl Harbor, fighting from Schofield Barracks, and fighting in the campaigns of New Guinea and the Philippines, later serving as part of the occupation forces of both Japan and Germany. I have a Japanese Battle Flag that my grandfather gave me years ago as a child that I am having framed. It includes a note from him indicating that it was taken off a deceased Japanese soldier in October 1944, outside the town of Dagupin, in the province of Lingayen, on the island of Luzon. The dead Japanese soldiers, one from whom this flag was taken, were inside a thatched hut. The hut was burned and the two Japanese soldiers were cremated. All indications from this website are that U.S. forces did not land on Luzon until February of 1945. Is it possible there were forces in this area in October of 1944, or was my grandfather's memory faulty? Incidentally, I am currently having the flag (Japanese writing, bloodstains and all) framed to hang in my house. I am extremely proud of my grandfather's service, but know little about his experiences, other than his military records and some pictures taken during WWII and Korea (after trying a number of times over the years to get him to relay accounts of his experiences, including a request to do a videotaped oral history, only to be told, quite sternly, that "war is hell, Jason," I stopped asking). He and I were very close and, six months before he died, I changed my last name to my mother's maiden name so that I could carry on his legacy. I buried him at Arlington. Any information on my grandfather would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

My family has little to no information on my grandfather and his experiences. We know nobody that fought bravely by his side. We are desperate to hear anything about Pedro Ortiz Castro. If anyone has any information about him or pictures to share we would be very grateful. No thought or rememberance is to insignificant. I thank everyone in advanced who will help us bring some light into our lives. God Bless.

Comments: My grandfather served in E Co 15th inf 3 div in 1952/53. His name is Kenneth Lockard. He took part in the battle at Outpost Harry as a squad leader. He lost many people. His records indicate that his bravery earned him a Silver Star. He did not talk much about the war when he returned. I am looking for anyone who may have known him or have pictures of him. I am also interested in collecting the awards that he earned and never received. I would appreciate any information on what the steps would be to do this or even if it is still possible. Thank you so much.

Comments: Official Defense History of the Final Days of the Korean war are piecemeal and incomplete. A long time ago we served in Korea at sites known then by American names, not Korean Proper places. The war experience to me was a moving war and MLR was not established but changed as the movement of troops progressed or receded. We had to dig our foxholes on the places where we set up resistance to the CCF.

Comments: OUTPOST HARRY REUNION
Eighty-five members/guests attended the thirteenth annual reunion of Outpost Harry Survivors Association, held in San Diego, California from June 10 to June 13, 2004 at the Holiday Inn at Mission Bay/Sea World area.
Following registration on Thursday a reception was held during which the group was welcomed by association president, Francis Riley and the motel staff. Jerry Cunningham, reunion coordinator briefed the group on the reunion schedule of activities and then the group was treated to a complimentary buffet.
Friday the group took an extended narrated tour of San Diego that included the downtown, business area, Navy and Marine facilities, Balboa Park, Coronado Island. Stops included the beach, Navy aircraft carrier Midway, a gourmet lunch served overlooking Mission bay and a typical waterfront shopping area. The evening was spent in the hospitality room viewing material from the associationÂ’s historical archives.
Saturday morning a memorial service was held in remembrance of the soldiers who died defending the outpost and the members who died since the last reunion.
While the members held the annual business meeting the ladies had brunch. Floyd Diewert was elected President and Del Tolen was elected Vice president. The reunion coordinator offered two sites for the 2005 reunion. The members voted for Hawaii.
During the banquet on Saturday night Major Tom Whitaker, Vice President of the Marne Association Outpost, gave a comprehensive presentation of the divisionÂ’s action in Iraq during OIF. He showed a brief video made up of events recorded by division soldiers. Major Whitaker on behalf of the OPHSA presented plaques to Chaplain Ed Hanrahan (Society Outpost # 5) and Editor/Photographer Jim Jarboe (Society Outpost # 22) for their devoted service to the association. President Floyd Diewert presented the Saint Maurice Medallion to survivor Paul Gregory of the 5th RCT.

We went in at Inchon, to Puson, then to Ewon and north to the chosin and the resort of Samsu overlooking the beautiful Yalu river. The 40 below was bad enough, but those divisions of unfriendly fellows on the other side of the river were not really musicians even with their bugle tooting. I am now 74 years old so I have forgotten some less thrilling things. I do remember, when we were drawing our weapons and clothing in the army or marine base south of LA, california, they had run out of parker liners, long johns, fatigue jacket liners, artic foot wear and most of the comfort apparel that was in fashion at the time. The only warm jacket I had was a communist quilted one that I liberated. The people I remember was a 15th Inf Warrant officer Lee A. Graves KIA. A 7th Cav regt, Able Troop, SFC John Glover platoon Sgt KIA Most of that Company were KIA. I had been in occupation with the 7th Cav previously at Camp Drake, Japan. The only one who survived of Able Troop that I know of was SFC Konapeski who I later saw at Fort Benning. Like most soldiers I was infantry first, but later received training as a medic, clerical, military police, supply, and what not.

In fact, I told him to watch the History Channel special "Fire and Ice" on the Korean War and he said he could watch any war except his own. I watched and was horrified! I have always been so very proud of my father & his service to his country but to see those pictures in the documentary made me very sad for all of you vets, alive or passed on. Us members of the younger generation have no idea of the sacrifices that were made or the depth of horror that was witnessed. God bless all the vets. Sincerely.......Claudia cpaluch@benemark.com

His military occupation is listed as (1745) Light Weapons Infantry Leader. His KIA date is 1953-07-16. This date coincides with the Kumsong River Salient. I have since tried to obtain his military records with the help of my grandfather, Charlie's brother, and I was informed that they were destroyed by fire some 20 years ago. Hopefully this info helps me and you figure out more information on my great uncle.

Comments: I am writing this for my dad, Carl W. Siegel. He has pancreatic cancer and only has a couple of months. He is 84 yrs. old and this past year is the first time he really started talking about the war. He doesn't have a lot of time left and is starting to get confused. But if anyone out there remembers him, he'd be thrilled to get a card or a quick note from you saying you remember him. He is deaf in one ear (war injury) so phone calls are kind of difficult. He feels forgotten right now so any rememberence would really up lift his spirts.
He was in WWII:5th Army(Tech 5). Hq Battery 4321 AAA AW Battalion. Campaigns: Tunisian, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, No. Appenines, Po Valley. He served from 1942-45
He was also in the Korean War: 3rd Div. 15th Inf. Co.A (Able) 1st Bn. He was a M/SG. He served from 1950-54 and then joined the Reserves until 1963.
He remembers he was a replacement for SG. Mills and he remembers doing patrol with a LT. Cobb along the Imgem(?)River.
Other names he recalls are Rocko from Brooklyn, Johnny Albright and Seth Huntley(?) from Askansas. I think they are from WWII.
He also remembers a guy named Nick from the Reserves who would stop by the house to visit and always had a handful of candy for us kids. At that time we lived in Hometown, IL.
Any acknowledgment of him would be greatly appreciated. Thank you you all.
His daughter,
Mariellen Spiros 847/963-1833

Recognition for Veterans |

John M. Bennett wrote on 2003-10-02 15:15:15.0
Comments: Fellow Veterans
My father John Madison Bennett is a veteran of WWII and I am a veteran of the Viet Nam era, and the nephew of a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, posthumously, of the Korean War. My uncle PFC EMORY L. BENNETT was a member of COMPANY B, 15th INFANTRY REGIMENT, 3rd INFANTRY DIVISION, and was killed near Sobangsan, Korea on June 24, 1951, while providing a one man cover fire so his company could effect an orderly with-drawl. The Emory L. Bennett Foundation Inc. was formed on Sept. 25, 2002 by family members, classmates, and friends of Emory to place a statue in his honor in the New Riverfront Park in Cocoa, Fl, and to remember ALL veterans of all wars or conflicts. Cocoa currently has no downtown recognition for veterans, itÂ’s about time. June 24th 2003, was 52 years since Emory was killed, now is the time to erect a lasting memorial in EmoryÂ’s home town to him and All veterans. Emory lived in Brevard County for 15 years before he enlisted in the Army. The park where the statue will be located is less than a block from where he lived most of his childhood. A life size statue, base and memorial plaques will cost in the neighborhood of $100,000.00. This is no small amount to be sure, but neither is the sacrifice that our veterans have made for all of us, as you well know, so we can enjoy the freedom of our day-to-day lives. In closing we are asking for your donations to this worthy cause, as it is the right thing to do. When asked, as you recall, our veterans did the right thing no matter what the cost, including sacrificing their life. All contributions are tax exempt to this memorial, CocoaÂ’s only downtown open-air veteranÂ’s recognition. Thank you for your monetary support. Please visit our web page listed below for more information and photos.
Sincerely, John Michael Bennett Treasurer of Emory L. Bennett Foundation Inc. P. O. Box 560803 Rockledge, FL 32956-0803 Email to emorylbennett@bellsouth.net http.www.home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=16&ext=1&groupid=82135&ck=

Also, my dad was removed as a truck driver and made a cook. He told me that he cooked for the Battlion commanders, exclusively.

Comments: My Dad, Leon Beusse, went in 11 Jan 52 at the age of 20 and sailed Korea from San Fran in the spring. He is still alive and well as of this writing. He doesn't (won't) talk much about his tour, but I'm sure he would like to contact former comrades. At one point, he was positioned at an outpost around 38th parallel, I think. He has mentioned Ch'orwon and the "Iron Triangle", or something like this. Late in '53 (again, I think this is accurate) he was detached to 8th Army headquarters in Seoul as an MP.
If anyone out there knew my Dad and/or where E company was during this period (and any details, such as location, action they saw, etc.), PLEASE, PLEASE E-MAIL ME. I think more closure for him would be great and healthy. Any information on reunions, available rosters, books, etc, would be appreciated as well.
Greatly appreciated and I wait for the day that Korean vets gain the recognition and appreciation they deserve,
Len Beusse (son)

Comments: Harold was my brother.I was 17 when he was killed and my family and I have searched for years to find out more about his death. We wanted to make sure his body was sent home and buried in the USA. His funeral wasn't until mid-Oct 1953,so we always wondered if he was really sent home.I loved my brother very much. It took years to get over the loss, and I still hurt when I think of him. He was one of the most special people I've ever known. Always kind and loving and very proud to serve this country. He left a wife and 6 month old Son,4 sisters and 1 brother and our parents.

He is currently retired and living with my mother in Hercules, CA. I am sure he would enjoy some of his old Army buddies dropping him a line. He has a brother who also service, Arne Seibel who is now located in Lodi, CA.
If any of you wish to correspond with them, please drop me a line at Potch35@hotmail.com.

Comments: Gorden is my fathere and I am trying to find people who might remember him. He is from Arkansas. Spent 3 years in the army. He got a purple heart, frozen feet, 3 bronze stars and rose up to SSG then busted to Cpl by a brand new Lt who had never seen a fight. He will not talk about his experiances and I would like find somebody who remembers him.
ANYBODY who can help me please contact me at wartoy@bigfoot.com. THanks for your help.
