Comments: My father, a Korean war vet 296th infantry/3rd Division 15th regiment needs one of his buddies to come forward and acknowledge his service and exposure to the battle field. I have been trying to help my dad get the awards that he deserve for being at the front line were he sustianed a injury to his head during incoming enemy fire.

DOD only shows him at the first phase of induction to the 296 infantry, but strangely enough they do not show any records of him being in the 3rd division 15 regiment at Kelly Hill. Ofcourse like many of our soldiers from that era he has been turn down for medals, pensions, Etc only because DOD has lost his medical records which would prove that he was wounded in combat. My father is in his final days, I refuse to see him go without recognition of his sacrifice to this nation. Please contact us with any info that might help him. Thank you, Jesse velez

I am interested to know if anyone remembers him. He served in Company E, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division as a squad leader. He received a silver star for the mission at outpost on the evening on June 10, 1953 into the early a.m. of June 11. He was from Sparta, Michigan. Please contact me if you can provide any additional information. Thank you! Tracey

Info on Sidney Edward Johnson

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Jason Johnson wrote on 2005-02-14 00:00:00.0

Comments: I am looking for any and all information regarding my grandfather, Sidney Edward Johnson. He grew up in Aiken, South Carolina. According to a copy of his "Form 66--Officer Qualification Record," he would have been either a 1st Lt or WOJG (his records indicate a resigned commission, though he was later an officer again; I believe he resigned his commission in order to get out of administration and back in a combat platoon) in "Co H 15th Inc FECOM" during Korea. His earlier service included survival of the attack on Pearl Harbor, fighting from Schofield Barracks, and fighting in the campaigns of New Guinea and the Philippines, later serving as part of the occupation forces of both Japan and Germany. I have a Japanese Battle Flag that my grandfather gave me years ago as a child that I am having framed. It includes a note from him indicating that it was taken off a deceased Japanese soldier in October 1944, outside the town of Dagupin, in the province of Lingayen, on the island of Luzon. The dead Japanese soldiers, one from whom this flag was taken, were inside a thatched hut. The hut was burned and the two Japanese soldiers were cremated. All indications from this website are that U.S. forces did not land on Luzon until February of 1945. Is it possible there were forces in this area in October of 1944, or was my grandfather's memory faulty? Incidentally, I am currently having the flag (Japanese writing, bloodstains and all) framed to hang in my house. I am extremely proud of my grandfather's service, but know little about his experiences, other than his military records and some pictures taken during WWII and Korea (after trying a number of times over the years to get him to relay accounts of his experiences, including a request to do a videotaped oral history, only to be told, quite sternly, that "war is hell, Jason," I stopped asking). He and I were very close and, six months before he died, I changed my last name to my mother's maiden name so that I could carry on his legacy. I buried him at Arlington. Any information on my grandfather would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

The war experience to me was a moving war and MLR was not established but changed as the movement of troops progressed or receded. We had to dig our foxholes on the places where we set up resistance to the CCF.

MARTIN A. Markley wrote on 2004-06-23 21:45:26.0

Comments: OUTPOST HARRY REUNION

Eighty-five members/guests attended the thirteenth annual reunion of Outpost Harry Survivors Association, held in San Diego, California from June 10 to June 13, 2004 at the Holiday Inn at Mission Bay/Sea World area.

Following registration on Thursday a reception was held during which the group was welcomed by association president, Francis Riley and the motel staff. Jerry Cunningham, reunion coordinator briefed the group on the reunion schedule of activities and then the group was treated to a complimentary buffet.

Friday the group took an extended narrated tour of San Diego that included the downtown, business area, Navy and Marine facilities, Balboa Park, Coronado Island. Stops included the beach, Navy aircraft carrier Midway, a gourmet lunch served overlooking Mission bay and a typical waterfront shopping area. The evening was spent in the hospitality room viewing material from the association’s historical archives.

Saturday morning a memorial service was held in remembrance of the soldiers who died defending the outpost and the members who died since the last reunion.

While the members held the annual business meeting the ladies had brunch. Floyd Diewert was elected President and Del Tolen was elected Vice president. The reunion coordinator offered two sites for the 2005 reunion. The members voted for Hawaii.

During the banquet on Saturday night Major Tom Whitaker, Vice President of the Marne Association Outpost, gave a comprehensive presentation of the division’s action in Iraq during OIF. He showed a brief video made up of events recorded by division soldiers. Major Whitaker on behalf of the OPHSA presented plaques to Chaplain Ed Hanrahan (Society Outpost # 5) and Editor/Photographer Jim Jarboe (Society Outpost # 22) for their devoted service to the association. President Floyd Diewert presented the Saint Maurice Medallion to survivor Paul Gregory of the 5th RCT.

Keywords: My orders for Korea got to me before the 15th Inf shipped out. I went to the 32nd of the 7th Inf Div on Mt Fuju, Camp McNair [we called it tin can city]. The Bn. Commander was Lt Col Gary H. Schumann, The HQ Co, Commander Was 1st Lt Lynn, A mess Sgt called Gabby, A SFC who wanted to be KIA for the glory.[We stayed as remote from him as we could get] We trained ROKS on Fugi. We went in at Inchon, to Puson, then to Ewon and north to the chosin and the resort of Samsu overlooking the beautiful Yalu river. The 40 below was bad enough, but those divisions of unfriendly fellows on the other side of the river were not really musicians even with their bugle tooting. I am now 74 years old so I have forgotten some less thrilling things. I do remember, when we were drawing our weapons and clothing in the army or marine base south of LA, california, they had run out of parker liners, long johns, fatigue jacket liners, artic foot wear and most of the comfort apparel that was in fashion at the time. The only warm jacket I had was a communist quilted one that I liberated. The people I remember was a 15th Inf Warrant officer Lee A. Graves KIA. A 7th Cav regt, Able Troop, SFC John Glover platoon Sgt KIA Most of that Company were KIA. I had been in occupation with the 7th Cav previously at Camp Drake, Japan. The only one who survived of Able Troop that I know of was SFC Konapeski who I later saw at Fort Benning. Like most soldiers I was infantry first, but later received training as a medic, clerical, military police, supply, and what not.

Comments: My dad served in the 25th - C Company - Robert A. Brantley. Is their anyone who remembers him or serving with him? He doesn't talk much about the war. In fact, I told him to watch the History Channel special "Fire and Ice" on the Korean War and he said he could watch any war except his own. I watched and was horrified! I have always been so very proud of my father & his service to his country but to see those pictures in the documentary made me very sad for all of you vets, alive or passed on. Us members of the younger generation have no idea of the sacrifices that were made or the depth of horror that was witnessed. God bless all the vets. Sincerely.......Claudia cpaluch@benemark.com
