Comments: I want to make a correction on my previous reference to Bloody Ridge.By intensive research I have discovered beyond all doubt that the actions of Able Co on 29 Sept 51 thru apox 5 Oct 1951 took place on Heartbreak Ridge rather than Bloody Ridge. The portion of the ridge indicated shown in the photo I talked about ic contained in grid squars 1237 & 1238 of 2ID map of Heartbreak Ridge. Comments: Thanks so much for your continued interest and response to my posts on Bloody Ridge. Im as anxious to pin this location and exact date down as you are.Until I saw the photo published in the Cobblestone publication I had, for nearly fifty years, thought the hill was called Baldy. The the V.F.W. magazine described Bloody Ridge as hill 983 and gave the casualty information and I just accepted it that I had been wrong on the hill name. In fact I cant recall ever hearing of Bloody Ridge until now, but 50 years is a long time and we are all subject to errors in our memory at times. One fact will never change in this military mind and that is that, under whatever name, the photo is of my initiation into mortal combat of which chapter in my book is called Baptism Of Fire. I need all the help I can get, from you and Ted and anyone else, to pin it down. Your maps are of extreme value and I am able to give you exact information on Able Cos position on the Imjim River the winter of 1951-52. The river ran through the line between A & B co. on the left flank of A co. Without getting bogged down on dates, I will say that 1st Bn. brought Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to us in that position and we were still there for New Years Day, 1952. I believe the A Co. commander was Captain Pearson at the time and one night the 3rd Platoon on out left flank where the river ran through the line, called a 60 mm flair mission and caught Charlie floating through the line on innertubes. That group didnt make it and the following day Cpt. Pearson called for volunteers to lay barbed and concentina wire across the river to put a stop to that game. I was one of about a dozen volunteers to follow that most outstanding commander into the river (ice out about 2 ft. from the bank on each side), the deepest water to the armpits of a 5 8 soldier. It put a stop to that activity. On our right flank where the river turned north into enemy territory was the 65th Puerto Rican Inf. and across the river in front of us was Little Nori where we kept approx. two enforcement squads all night and one squad through the day. Every evening, regular as clock work, Bed Check Charlie, a one engine aircraft, flew across the front with loud speakers telling us Go home G.I., your country dont care about you and several other such phrases. As the days went on, our outpost was attacked very regularly at night causing us to withdraw, then we would attack the folowing morning and retake our O.P. This was happening all along the front until, I estimate, March or April when Bn. was assigned to enclosure #10 prisoner of war compound near Pusan when things were getting hot on Kogie Do Island with P.O.W. problems. Enough for this time. Come on 1st. Bn. 15th Inf. veterans, help us with our memory of the events of those years. I skipped over a lot of good happenings which cant be left out , but help us out OK! (more to follow)
Sincerely,
JC Poe

Comments: I write this in hopes that someone may recall and respond. I want you to have a place in my book by name and photo if you have a suitable one of then or now. Speaking of recalling, I wasnt able to forget nor do I think anyone else could. Speaking of it may be another thing!
According to the June/July 2000 edition of the V.F.W. Magazine "Bloody Ridge" (hill 983), the 2nd Inf. Div. and attached units during the period of Aug. 18th through Sept. 5th, 1951, sustained 326 KIA, 2,032 WIA and 414 M.I.A. Counted enemy dead totaled 1,389. The 15th F.A. Bn. set a record by firing 14,425 rounds in 24 hrs.
What is not said, is that high ground property was very, very expensive during the fall and winter of 1951 & 1952. Said property exchanged hands many times between the North Korean/Chinese and American and allied forces. By the 29th of Sept. "Bloody Ridge" was again in the hands of the enemy.
It is a fact that Able company, 15 Inf. Rgt., along with the participating units involved, attacked and re-took "Bloody Ridge" on 29 Sept., 1951. I know this because I was there. What I don't know is the number of casualties on both sides but I know they were extremely high.
When I visited Korea in 1963, I attended Air observer school at Camp Casey and during that time I was privileged to stand on the O.P. from which artillery fire was being adjusted in the impact area where the small hill called "Little Norie", which was Able company's O.P. during the winter of 1951-52 on our Imjim River M.L.R. position. As I observed this ATT (army training test) firing, I was seeing the old Able co. position 13 years after the fact and I cant describe the shock I experienced as it all came back as though it were only yesterday.
To lend credibility to the following analysis, let me first preface it with a brief history of my training. In Vietnam in 1967, when I was 1st Sgt. of A Btry. 4th Arty., it became necessary for me to leave artillery because of damage sustained to my ears from being a 60 mm mortar gunner during most of my Korean war tour of duty and the noise exposure of field artillery guns to a point where further exposure would have sent me totally deaf. Consequently, I acquired MOS 96B50 (Intelligence Analysis) and it remained my primary MOS until retirement in March of 1973. This Air Observer/Intelligence Analysis experience gives me the ability to analyze and interpret what I see in the photo of "Bloody Ridge". Having been there also helps considerably.
Just on the forward slope you will see a bunker position with a 57 mm recoilless rifle and a crew of two. Sitting at their right is an observer with his elbows on his knees holding binoculars to his eyes. He would be giving adjustment orders to the 3 squad leaders who are standing facing the 60 mm mortar and giving them data for charge settings and range and deflection settings. Bare in mind that at the time the 60 mm mortar had been base plate and site with range and defleciton settings and a leveling bubble supported by a tripod. To the right rear of the sitting observer is a 30 cal machine gun at very prominent bunker. I have indicated the squad leaders & mortars position, as well as my first day fox hole and the bomb crater, with arrows on the photo of "Bloody Ridge".
I have a strong feeling that the photo was taken on the 2nd or 3rd day at the final assault on the ridge and second peak was taking place. The photo could have been taken from an aircraft or even the 2nd peak.
In any case I would estimate that the scene as depicted in the photo shows the men of heavy weapons Platoon, Able Co. 1st Bn 15th Inf. Rgt. 3rd Inf. Div. Sept./Oct. 1951. I feel that I was among those shown in the photo. On that day, myself and one other man collected the canteens of all the others and made a trip down the hill to a small, clear stream at the bottom of this hellish place and returned with much needed relief for the dry parched throats of the platoon.
I wish to mention that during our stay on the Imjim river position we had elements of British, Australian, and Greek armies in and through our company area for reasons I either cant recall or did not know. Most striking is my recall of either the British or Aussie unit stopping to have a meal of mutton in contrast to our usual C-rations gave me the desire to try some of this meal but I never did. I also recall that the 3rd Bn. 15th Inf. was still all black but was finally integrated completely during that time frame. To the left front of our position at some distance was a hill called Breadloaf and as I recall, also called hill 255. As I recall the 2nd & 3rd Bn.s had been involved in taking it, losing it and retaking it with extremely high casualties on both sides. As I recall, A co. was pulled off the line and temporarily replaced by a Greek unit while we engaged in practice attacks on similar terrain with live fire, somewhere not too far behind the line. I wont try for the dates because military exercise records will probably supply them if you can get enough information to make cross checks. Something in my memory tells me the Turkish army and maybe the Britts got involved with this fighting. In any case we did not go on to that practiced mission and we returned to our MLR position and the Greek unit pulled out. I would like to view the unit morning reports during that fall and winter with Able company but I dont know how to gain access to that. If I could, one of them would show that around the 1st of the year I went to Kocura, Japan on I&I, or was it called R&R? Sometimes during this tour on the Imjim we had a platoon patrol trapped in a minefield and the platoon Sgt. (name not recalled) was wounded and decorated for valor and later awarded a battlefield commission. Hows that for a cross check with the archives? Well, Hal, I dont think I dreamed any of it and perhaps between the archives and the Vets responses I hope you and I can put it all together. I guess I should tell you that during the second half of my first year tour of duty of 67 & 68 in Vietnam I was a 1st Sgt. of the 246th PSYOP Co. at bien Hoa. I keep hoping that experience will help us to inflict some PSY war tactics on all those 1st Bn. 15th vets and get them to come to our side in our quest for more firsthand info. on this 50 yr. anniversary.
Sincerely,
JC Poe

Comments: I was a member of A co., 15th Inf. in Sept. 1951. I recently acquired a copy of the Cobblestone "The Korean War" fall of 1999. Page 11 contained a photo of Bloody Ridge. I identify this photo as the objective which A company spearheaded an attack on the 29th & 30th of Sept. 1951. As I am writing my autobiography I identified a bomb crater and freshly dug two-man fox hole in the center of the photo approx. 20 meters from the ridge line. A fellow soldier and I dug the fox hole during the operation. The bomb crater contained several wounded during the operation. I have no memory of names, with the exception of the Able Company medic, last name Love, an over 6 foot black soldier holding the rank of Corporal. He was tending to wounded when the crater was hit by large mortar and he too, became a casualty. I was only a few feet away and he appeared to be hit in the neck area. I do not know if he survived, however, he did not return to the unit. I spent my entire tour of duty with Able company as a 60 mm mortar gunner. I would appreciate information pertaining to any survivor (s) of the operation on Bloody Ridge to assist in completing my book titled "The Diversities Of A Lifetime". My information is that the company comander was KIA and later recommended for the CMH. I have information on the activity of the unit up until the 1st Bn. assumed command of enclosure #10 prisoner of war compound near Pusan when the problems were occurring with prisoners on Cheju-do Island, in 1952, from which I returned to the land of round door knobs at the end of my tour. Any informaiton may be emailed to my daughter at the email address above or to my home address listed above. Sincerely, JC Poe E-8, retired 497-32-3361 RA17322563

Comments: For many years, I have been looking for the wrong name! I had remembered the wrong name. My foxhole buddy who was KIA 16 Apr 1953 was not an Anderson but a Tillman. George D. Tillman, Bullock Co, GA., died instantly on the early morning of 16 Apr 1953. At the same time, I was SWIA. We were on Outpost Tom, just south of Jackson Heights. We had been up all night from attempted assualts on our unit. Tom and I shared a listening post at the foot of Outpost Tom. Much, much shelling, rifle and machine gun fire all around us throughout the nite of the 15th of April 1953.
We survived all of the fire all nite, but the next morning of the 16th, a recon was sent to survey the enemy killed. As the patrol moved around the base of Outpost Tom, boom; of course, I did not hear the boom. I awoke sometime later, face down on the ground. George was killed by the artillery shell or morter....
Would like to hear from family members of George D Tillman, as I have often wanted to get in touch with them. I know he had living parents, a wife and a child. Sure hope I can add closure to this 47 year old story....

Comments: The defense of Outpost Harry began several months before June 1953. As best I can recall it took place around Nov 1952.* The defense of the OP was the responsibilty of Fox Company, 15th Inf Reg.at the time. Although the fighting was not as severe or as long in duration as the Jun 10-18, 1953 fighting, in one night a platoon from OP Harry, dug in on high ground (a forward OP a few thousand yards in front of OP Harry), was over run by the CCF. The majority of the platoon was captured including Platoon Leader, 2nd Lt Denmark. The CCF did not attempt to overrun the main OP. Fighting for the high ground was preceded by several thousand rounds of mortar and artillery fire on the forward OP and OP Harry. In addition to US casualties they were a number of Korean Choggie bearers who were unlucky enough to be bearing ammo and rations when the attack took place.
1st Lt Thomas Leschak Company Commander Company F 15th Infantry Regiment
* I recall this date after surfing the internet recently. I discovered Lt Denmark was captured on Nov 6, 1952. The CCF did not attempt to overrun the main OP.

Comments: It would be Number One to hear from anyone in Able Company of the 15th Regiment during December 1951 to November 1952, particularly anyone from the 2nd Platoon. I also would like to share memories of anyone from Baker Company about Outpost Kelly. Come to think of it, I would like also to hear from anyone who was a Light 30 Machinegunner - if there are still any around.
