Comments: John Sarno left Chicago, IL. in October 1950 headed for California to ship out. When he arrived at the base in California he called to inform us that the Army had misplaced his papers. Due to this he was unable to depart with his battalion. He remained at base in CA until his papers had been located and he shipped out with another group. Once John arrived in Korea, again he was told that his papers had been misplaced and he remained behind until they were located. At this point we are told he was sent with a third group toward Kangnung, South Wonju. This is the location we are told John was either killed or taken prisoner. If anyone can verify or provide additional information regarding his whereabouts at any time, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Comments: I've just recently found this site and would be interested to know if anyone out there remembers my uncle PFC Rueben J Goerl, 15th FA, 2nd Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action near Hoengsong, South Korea on February 13, 1951. He was eventually returned home to Wisconsin after being listed as MIA.

Mark Horton wrote on 2008-11-10 11:50:10.0

Comments: My father was a forward observer for the 15th Artillery Battalion in Korea and as a young child he told me many stories of that time. His name was Max Horton. He went on to be a career army officer, rising to Fill Colonel and working with Pershing Missiles. He died relatively young, 18 years ago, from a number of things, including (I think) cancer brought on from being an atomic survivor.

I am just now reading David Halberstam's book on the Korean War - "The Coldest Winter" - and it has brought a renewed interest in finding out more about my father and what he went through, especially so I can share that with my four kids who never met him.

I thought I would send an email to see if anyone might remember his name.

Thanks for any help on this!

Tim Bradshaw wrote on 2008-11-01 21:52:27.0

Comments: My Father, Timothy E. Bradshaw Sr., passed away two years ago on October 10, 2006. Fortunately during the few years before his death, he became a member of the 2nd ID veterans group and was able to once again communicate with some of his "battle buddies" I know of Oscar Cortez for one and a few others.

In 2000 I took him on a trip to Fort Sill where we lived for quite a few years. While there we visited his old First Sergeant Charlie Limmerick. It was an unforgettable time. I was able to take some pictures of thier renunion. It was definatley the first time he had seen him since the Korean War.

We also have been in touch with the family of Everette Chappell [He died while in captivity in Feb 1950] Everette was a close friend of my father. Everette spent the night with him the night before they embarked for basic training at Fort Knox, Ky in Feb 1950. They served together from there and went to Fort Lewis where they became part of the 15th Arty. My Dad was cannoner in the 3rd Section of A Battery. He told me his gun fired the first round of the war and that he had kept the empty shell behind the seat of thier truck. On Jan 3, 1951 he was shipped to Japan with frozen feet. Because of this action, he escaped the terrible slaughter of the battalion in February at the time Everette was captured. He told me he returned from Japan to the unit and assisted with the details to recover the dead. This was something he never talked about for many years, fortunatley, after he reunited with other members of the 2nd ID organization, he began to share some of his stories with me.

He would get emotional when he recounted his experiences. He was very proud to have served with this unit.

A few years before his death, I purchased a Korean War era patch of the 2nd ID and gave it to him for a keepsake. He requested that I place it over his heart when he passed. He was given a beautiful military funeral by members of the 18th Airborne Corps from Fort Bragg. This was the last unit he served with just before retiring from the Army in 1969. When I took my last look at him lying in his casket, I honored his request and placed the Indian Head Patch on his heart and he was buried with it. His bronze plaque on his tomb is cast with the same commemorating him as a Korean War Veteran.

Just before his retirement, he served a year in Viet Nam. He loved the Army. This is a great website and I am very proud of his service. Thanks for being here. It brings comfort. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him.

I would love to hear from others who served about that time. I would really like to hear from Dean Paisley who stood by me while in the field. I believe he lived around Memphis Tenn. After over 50 years it is really hard to remember every detail. I am a service connected Disable veteran, and I serve as chaplain for my local DAV chapter. I am also a minister with 40 years service to my Lord.

His name was Eugene Florez and when he became ill he wanted me to find out if any of his old friends were still alive. Unfortunately, he passed away before I was able to find anyone. So, I'm still hoping someone out there remembered him. He was the kindest and most gentle father anyone could hope for and I'd like to grant this last wish of his. Keywords: C Btry 15th FA Bn and Korean Service Medal w/5 Campaign Stars, Distinguished Unit Citation is the only information I have other than some pictures. The earliest picture I is of him standing near a ship in the background with the number 699 and on the back of the picture is written Pusan, Korea 16 Oct 50. I don't know if that is when he just arrived or what. The latest date on the back of a picture I can find is him in the field by a big gun 3 Aug 1951 where it also says my chief of section, Junior Billingsley. I also have a picture of another soldier, I assume his friend named either Danny King or Davey or Dougy King. I have other pictures. Anybody can add to this info I would like. He also talked about Pork Chop Hill.
