Looking for Grandfathers History

Comments: My grandfather passed away 5 years ago this May and I have not information on his tour of duity in Korea. I have man of his slides from his time in Korea, and the most informaiton I have found from them is him next to a sign that stated "SV Btry 145th Fabn Not Without Honor" He never talked about his Army life, and I would like to know if any of you might of known him. 145th Field Artillery Battalion

Comments: I am doing a project for a class I am taking and interviewed Lt Jim Grinnan who was in Korea with the 145th Field Artillery Battalion. He was in Korea from 1951 to 1952. In my interview, the only other name he mentioned was a Captain Walter. He had a few stories about his tour but not much. If anyone has any information about Lt Grinnan or Captain Walter please let me know.

Comments: Just returned from visit to Korea and our son who is now stationed there.

What a change !!

Haven't been there since 1951-52 and really was impressed by the change and the warmth of the people. Whenever the locals learn that you were there during the Korean War, they thank you for helping to save their country.

I even met an older gentleman who, as a boy, helped by carrying heavy things up the hills ( a chogey boy --but they don't prefer that name) when we left, he gave me a set of lovely chop sticks as a remembrance. His son had to translate, but the warmth was quite evident.

Need memorabelia for my father's birthday

Comments: I need help desperately. My father, Edwin C. Williams was in the 145th field artillery bn. in Korean war, I beleive in 1951-52. His discharge papers indicate he was honorably discharged with 3 bronze stars. He is in a nursing home now and our family would love to surprise him on his birthday July 13th with pictures of his army buddies and reasons for his medals. And other memorabilia if we can find it. He also had a memory book with all of his buddies in it. As children, me and my sister had no idea how much this meant to him, and we got to it and tore it up. I would love to be able to replace this to help him to heal. PLEASE HELP. I would like to get whatever information you might have early enough to frame it and place it on his nursing home wall. Photos dropped treadway bridge chosin

Comments: Is there anyone who could help me in closing a gap in my private project: a large photo collection of the Korean War which I started as a high school student upon the outbreak of the war in 1950 prompted by the first worldwide action against aggression. Caught by the heroism and the power of endurance during the Chosin Campaign it fills an important part of this collection, but - understandable - so far no photos of dropping and installing of the treadway bridge sections to re-open the road to freedom and safety. R.O.C. Presidential Unit Citation

Comments: My late father was in the 145th FABn ("C" Btry)from Nov. 1951 to late Jan. 1952 - at which time he was injured and sent to the 21st Evac. hospital in Pusan, then Tokyo Army Hospital Annex APO 1052, then home with an early discharge.

His uniform (among many other items) was lost in a fire during my youth. A couple years before he died of cancer, I found out how to contact the Army in order to get replacement medals. (I later found out that he had never received many of the medals themselves, just the "ribbon bars".)

One of the medals he was awarded was the Republic of Korea "Presidential Unit Citation", or ROCPUC ("rock puke"). I would very much like to know any details about the events surrounding this unit citation.

I would also like to find a picture of the 145th field battery insignia in order to locate a duplicate or have one made.

Comments: I was in Korea from June 1953 until September 1954. The spring of 1954 I bought a movie camera. I have about 14 minutes of film that has been put on tape. It is not in the sequence that it was taken but is interesting to see. It is amature filming and not high quality. Some of it is not to bad. I had not seen the film in almost 30 years and it brought tears to my eyes. I remember some of the guys names and some I don't. If anyone thinks they might want to see it and thinks they might be in it they can contact me and I will make them a copy. Some of the guys I remember are; Lt Degan,Sgt Caloway,Bill(the cook),Stevens,Banks,Tippet and Whitey. There are other faces that are familiar but I don't remember the names. This is a list of the thing in the film. The forward out post on the front line Korean solders. Doing laundry. Battery area. The guns The Thing and Kiss of Fire. Crossing the river when we went to dedicate a school we built for a village. A Korean farmer plowing with oxen and a wooden plow. Some of the guns being fired. And guys goofing arounds. Comments: Hi, my 2nd cousin fought in the Korean War...I am currently in South Korea, entertaining the 37,000 troops that are here, playing music. Comments: I was in the 145th, (Able battery) from January '54 until the battalion went back to Utah. Our Bn then became the the 612th, 5th group, IX corps. We moved to camp Drake, Japan in December of '54. I went home in May of '55. Comments: I arrived B battery the middle of June 1953.The area was southeast of the punchbowl. I was a radio opertor in the FDC. LT Gard was the commander. He was promoted to CPT and transferred. CPT Perry T Dew took over the command. After the cease fire we moved about a mile to the rear.After a couple months CPT Dew transferred to HQTRS. I think this is when LT Heflin took command. We spent the winter in this location. In the spring we moved back to within a mile or 2 of the Btn. Th area was so steep they had to use a cat to blade out places on the hill side to put up our tents. Then we built steps out of logs to the top of the area. It kept us in good shape just getting to our tents. At sometime LT Degan came into our bat. as the XO. I left in September 1954. We had 155mm Longtoms and one self propeled 155mm. They all had names;Kiss of Fire,Peacemaker, Bellowing Bitch,Killer One and The Thing. I do have some pictures of some of them. We also had ROK in with us for training.Most of them were named KIM, so we had to give them names to tell them apart. Like there was Wire Kim, Scoce(don't know if that is spelled right. It means little)Kim and Kitchen Kim. If anyone is ever on their way to Yellowstone Park and go through Worland,Wy. stop and vist.

Philadelphia memorial

Comments: With my granddaughter Hayley, I attended the dedication of the Philadelphia Memorial today, June 22, 2002. It is a beautiful four sided structure displaying a three year history of the war. It is located near Penn's Landing on the Delaware river. The Korean ambassador was present and a Korean general who gave a very moving expression of appreciation to the veterans and the American people. Those of you visiting Philly should stop by.

Comments: I want to correct one of my comments of Feb. 20. In early 1953 the X Corps consisted of the ROK 7th Division on the left (west), 45th Div. left center, ROK 20th right center and ROK 12th on the right. The IX Corps was west of X Corps and ROK I Corps was on the east side. A and C Batteries supported ROK 7 and 45th while B Battery supported ROK 20 and ROK 12. Because of the longtoms' range, the battalion could cover some of the IX and ROK I Corps' territory if needed.

By the cease-fire, The ROK II Corps had moved between IX and X Corps, The ROK 7th Division had moved west to ROK II Corps, 45th Div. had moved to ROK 7th's vacated position on the X Corps left and the 40th Div. had moved into the X Corps left center where 45th had been (Heartbreak and Bloody Ridges area). The battalion had to move further south because of establishment of the DMZ. B Battery moved more than a mile back in the Long north-south flatland along the Soyang River and was then southeast of the Punchbowl instead of east where it had been for months.

Comments: I was assigned to the 145th in Sep '52 as survey officer and did FO duty on top of Heartbreak. I was assigned asst S-3 and worked fire direction and FO from Dec '52 We were in position (A and C batteries) just south of Heartbreak. B battery was to the east around the Punchbowl and we didn't see much of them. Van Fleet moved us once to Triangle Hill for some reason I never understood. CO was Col Golloday, Major Jagoda was S-3, Capt Boiler was S-2, Jim Angel was Survey Officer, John O'Neill was Chaplain. Anybody know of any of them?

B Battery, 145th FABn

Comments: I was an assistant XO in B Battery, 145th FABn, 8th Army attached to X Corps late summer and early autumn, 1953. B battery was detached from battalion in support of 45th Div. and 7th ROK. We were just southeast of the Punchbowl. We had 4 towed 155 guns (Kiss of Fire, Peacemaker, Bellowing Bitch and Killer One) and a self propelled 155 gun (The Thing). Rest of battalion was west of the Punchbowl near Heartbreak Ridge and Bloody Ridge and beside a river (Sochon River?).

Battery B commander was CPT Robert Gard, a West Point grad who retired in 1980s as lieutenant general. XO was a 1LT Halsey. Other officers were 2LT (David?) Gibson and 2LT Henry Heflin. I was flying observer for a couple of weeks (L-19s) but went back to battery duties when Halsey and Gibson rotated home. CPT Gard was transferred to Corps and CPT Perry Dew became BC. He was there only a month or so. When I left on early release from active duty (around end of October) 2LT Heflin was the only officer left in the battery.

Comments: I joined B Battery, 145th FAB in Ft Sill just before it shipped out to Korea. I was an enlisted reservist who worked in FDC, communications and FO and promoted to Staff Sgt in Korea. Finally left Korea after delays due no replacements in Dec, 1952.

KOREA Dec. 1951-July 1952

Comments: I was in the Survey section. We arrived with the original 145th in Pusan, Korea, December 3rd, 1951. I was discharged July 4th, 1952 (the entire country celebrates my discharge. Once our firing units had been "surveyed in" Sgts. Whatcott and Broadhead were on Heartbreak Ridge in our bunker acting as forward observers (FO's) We were up 4 days, back with the battery headquarters actings as Fire Direction personnel for 8 days, etc. Our Survey Officer, Lt. Bob Ostergaard, would pull the idential shift with us. Dean Tuttle (Captain) was our battery commander. Colonel Galsworthy was our battalion commander. To my knowledge the only member of the 145th F.A. Btn from the original guard that came from Utah that was killed during the Korean conflict was Don Tibbs, a tractor mechanic from Indianola, Fairview, Utah. He was called by his MOS but when he got to Korea the U.N. forces were in retreat and he was given an M-1 rifle and put in an infantry unit. He sent Vern Whatcott a letter and said they had been at the base of this hill for 3 days and never moved an inch. He was killed shortly after sending the letter, still at the base of Heartbreak Ridge. We used to look at that battle-scarred hill and wonder just where Don was at its base when he wrote the letter. While I was there they took a couple of the long-toms from Baker battery and made them self propelled 155's. They were placed near the 1st (?) Marine Division as support artillery. A Wyoming 105mm battatlion was in front of us and we used to see them taking incoming fire as we would be playing voleyball after evening mess. Then in would come the helicopters to take out the wounded. It was nearly a takeoff on "MASH". It is amazing that to this date there has never been a 145th F.A. Bn. reunion to the best of my knowledge.

Comments: I arrived at the 145th bn on Jan 11, 1954. I was lucky in that the fighting had ended while I was in basic. Very cold, most of the battery lived in tents but the bunkers were still there. The guns were still dug in with bunkers along side for the crews. I trained with the survey crew for a month then joined the FDC section. My chief of section was Roy C. Hall from Mich. The bc was Lt Manley. Both had been ther quite a while. In spring most of the bunkers were pushed down and leveled. The gun bunkers and the FDC bunker remained. The mess hall bunker was turned into a beer hall with our own juke box and a pool table. HQ was across the river. Charlie battery was near us but they moved baker into the next valley, to the west I think. The following November we turned our area and our equip over to the Koreans and moved to camp Drake, outside of Tokyo. We were given long toms on tracks. That winter we spent some time at a marine camp and artillery range up on Mt Fuji. I went home in May.
