NEED HELP LOCATING |
| JOY FLOWERS wrote on July 17, 2008 CITY AND STATE: TORRINGTON CT UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: My dad is 78 and in failing health. He enlisted at 16 or 17 and went through basic at Fort Dix, NJ. He remembers he was in the 13th Engineers Batilion and was in Korea and in Japan. I have 2 photos of him in uniform, one at completion of basic and one as a private first class. He does not have anything else to prove he was ever enlisted and trying to secure him veteran's benefits is like beating myself in the head with a brick. I have enlisted the help of our local VA office, the gentlemen there are wonderful but they are also at loss. I found this site and was hoping anyone would remember the soldier that ran the rollerskating rink, was a boxer and other recreational activities while enlisted. His name is John F. Santagata from Stamford, CT. He served in the late 40's, we're thinking he enlisted around 44 or 45 and out by 1948. My dad was a skinny guy, weighing maybe 125 lbs. | TINA KUTSCHBACH wrote on June 9, 2005 CITY AND STATE: CHILLICOTHE OH UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: John Edward Kutschbach served in the US Army, Private Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. 7th Infantry Division - Service Engineer Unit Wounded July 4, 1953 in Korea, Died July 15, 1953 in a Japanese hospital. MY UNCLE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR THIS COUNTRY, BUT IS NOT RECOGNIZED AS KIA FOR THE KOREAN WAR. YOU WILL NOT FIND HIS NAME ON ANY MEMORIAL!!!!! WHY? Chillicothe Gazette, July 28, 2003 Forgotten victim As the names of those who died during the conflict were read, one was especially important to Tina Kutschbach, of Chillicothe. Her uncle, John E. Kutschbach, of Kinnikinnick, died on July 15, 1953, from wounds suffered in battle at the age of 22. Tina has fought a battle of her own trying to get her uncle recognized. He was not listed as a war casualty in the National Archives. Tina said his name was omitted because he died in a hospital in Japan, not on the battlefield. "It's just really sad that the government can't recognize someone just because of where he died," she said. Tina said the United States was trying to keep the number of casualties down, so they didn't include people who died out of Korea. She said she has tried contacting veterans organizations and politicians to have John honored, but to no avail. "It's either no one has interest, or no one can do anything," she said. Keywords: |
