Comments: I'm looking for any information about my grandfather, Mr. Pryor Wilson Sandlin. At one point he spelled his first name Pryer. I've been rather unsuccessful finding any information about his tour in Korea. He went on to work for NASA at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. I am a US Army Civil Servant currently working at the same Arsenal, and would be greatful for any and all information which can be provided. I know he went through training at Camp Campbell, KY because I found an old silk scarf he sent my grandmother from there. Again, any information would be greatly appreciated. Information may be sent to DestinWS@yahoo.com. Thank you very much.

I Remember Korea

Comments: I was A Platoon leader in Company A of the 1343 Comba engr. Bt. Later assigned as Asst. S3 at Battallion HQ. In 1951 In Korea from Jan 1951 through April 1952'

I remember Korea by Ed Wright 7/26/03

The Korean police action started in mid June 1950. The North Koreans quickly took Seoul and pushed toward Pusan before General MacArthur made a bold strike by invading at Inchon, well behind the enemy lines. The United Nations and the Republic of Korea (ROK) troops quickly pushed toward the Yalu River before the Chinese intervened.

With the Chinese in the conflict the United Nations and ROK troops were again driven south and toward Pusan. President Harry Truman Nationalized all reserve and National guard units in states that voted for the States Right Party and sent them to Korea after a refresher course in basic training. I was caught up in this call-up. I was a second Lieutenant platoon leader in the 1343 Combat Engineer Battalion. We were sent to Fort Campbell, KY for training before taking a long train ride across the US/Canadian border to Seattle Port of Embarkation. We shipped out on the Marine Phoenix skirting Alaska to Yokohama, Japan. We stopped there long enough to take on fresh supplies.

I took my platoon for a tour of Yokohama and returned to the ship later than was allowed. When the MP started taking names, I told him to charge me with 26 personnel being late. They were with me and I would take the responsibility. I never heard about it again except the Colonel mentioned it in passing.

We landed in Pusan to await our equipment that was arriving on other ships. We were ar a garden spot of Korea. A beautiful Beach and Quonset Huts for quarters. My platoon built a pier while we were there. Many thousands of North Korean and Chinese POWs left from this pier for internment on an island to the south. While we were there, I accompanied the Colonel and other officers to Tague, 8th Army HQ, to get deployment orders. It was on this trip that I decided the war could be won quickly if we gave each North Korean and Chinese soldier a jeep with the horn disconnected. I noticed that the ROK troops drove like crazy and blew the horn of the Jeep to tell others to get out of their way. If the commies all had Jeeps they would soon kill each other.

When our equipment we boarded an LST and headed for Inchon. The tides in Inchon are very high and the port is only open during high tide. We disembarked there and headed north east toward Chunchon, Korea. We set up tents and started building roads, bridges and airstrips. Things went well until the spring of 1951 when the Chinese infiltrated our lines and started forest fires to provide a smoke cover for their new offensive. Our airplanes could not detect their movement. We had to pull up stakes and advance to the rear a couple of times.

After the Chinese had exhausted their supplies the infantry and marines counter attacked and pushed them back of the 38th parallel in most locations except for an area just northwest of Seoul. The war was starting to become a stalemate while we were not allowed to win it, the Chinese and North Koreans couldnt win either.

We moved further north near the Punch Bowl. We supported many artillery groups and the first Marine Division. During lulls in work, I took a trip to Seoul and Inchon looking for parts for a crane. From the number of pictures that I took during this trip, one could decide that I spent lots of time there but I didnt. Just a couple of days. I took lots of pictures of the Korean people, destroyed buildings including the capitol and of Inchon Harbor.

I even took time to attend USO shows with Danny Kaye and another with Jack Benny. Needless to say, thousands of others also attended the shows.

I also visited the front lines several times and saw lots of incoming and outgoing ordinances. I even went to the coast and watched the battleship Missouri bombard the Chinese and North Koreans with 16" or 18" shells about 20 miles away. We maintained the roads in the Punch Bowl and a P 51 and Corsair made emergency crash landings there. I also visited the mobile artillery unit bombarding Hill 1181 on the west rim of the Punch Bowl and watched our airplanes drop 1,000 pound bombs on the enemy.

Christmas time brought lots of snow to our camp and beyond. My rotation came after a nice two week R&R in Kokura, Japan. On my way home, The ship that brought me from Inchon, Korea, landed in Sasabo, Japan. I took a train ride to Yokohama and sailed back to Seattle on the General Anderson. A flight back home included a Boeing StratoCruiser.

I hope that I can never forget the nice folks in Korea. Both the natives and the United Nation Troops. It is an experience that builds character.

Comments: Dear Sirs,

My name is Jeff Daniel, My father James N. Daniel, served with Co A from Aug 1950 to Feb 1952.

He was from Courtland Alabama and went by "Jim" or "Buddy".

He originally enlisted in the Alabama National Guard and when his unit was activated he was sent to Korea.

He held an MOS in demolitions. His Military Record shows that he was involved in some degree with the First Counter Offensive (Jan-Apr 1951) and the Communist Forces Spring Offensive (Apr 1951-Feb 1952).

My father passed away in 1985; due to a divorce I had not seen him since I was 8 years old.

I am trying to locate anyone who might have known him, to find out more about him or the 1343rd Engr Bn in Korea..

If you can help, I would truly appreciate it!

I am a veteran also with 20 years of active service.

Thank you again,

Jeff Daniel, rjdaniel3@sbcglobal.net

Comments: My name is Tom Holton. My dad, George T. Holton served in Korea from Feb. 1952- Feb. 1953. He was injured under a bombed bridge (I assume that it was one he was helping to build) There was a breif writeup in Stars and Stripes Newspaper. My dad has since passed away(12-12-91). He never talked much about his time in Korea, so I do not know when the bridge incident actually happened. He was never presented with a Purple Heart and as most of you would know, his files were destroyed in the fire of 1973 at the record depot. If I can find 3 servicemen that can confirm this story, I will be able to get his Purple Heart. Also, if I can find the article in the Stars and Stripes archive in Washington, that would be proof enough. I have built a website dedicated to my dad and his memory. You may check it out at www.dudewheresmyfile.com Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to hear from anyone that remembers me from Korea. When the 1343rd left Korea I was sent to the 74th Comat Engineers and rotated home in 1955.

Comments: write-up for the 50th reunion, held in Decatur, Alabama on July 3, 2000.

1343rd Engr. Combat Battalion 50th Anniversary of Korean War Service 1950 - 2000 American Legion Center Decatur, Alabama July 3, 2000

My nephew Steve Roberts, from Decatur sent me a URL to a story in the Decatur Daily newspaper regarding the 50ty anniversary of my National guard unit being mobilize and sent to Korea.

I tried calling former Sergeant Jay Shealy and kept getting answering machines. I asked Steve to find out if former sergeant Tommy Counts had an E-mail address. Steve sent that to me and I contacted Tommy by E-mail. He tried to contact both Jay Shealy and Mack Vinson and got answering machines on both telephones.

Jay Shealy’s wife called me back and said that Jay was in the hospital for removal of part of his colon. I wished him well and said that I would come by and see him during my visit the following week. Tommy Counts assured me that I could pay at the door and would have a reservation.

I drove to Decatur Monday Morning, July 3rd and dropped by to see my sister Hope Wright Compton and gave her copies of photographs of my new grandson Charles Edward Wright who was born yesterday. I copied them from my son Bob’s web page covering the big event. I then went to my Sister Mary Wright Robert’s home and got ready to attend the reunion. Mary took me by the American Legion Center to make certain that I would not get lost.

On our way to her home we went by the hospital and visited with Jay Shealy and his lovely wife Lynn. Jay was doing fine and hopes to be out of the hospital in a few days. I had not seen him since the 25th anniversary of this group back in 1975.

I arrived at the American Legion Center on time, paid my dues and entered the building. I was surprised that the place was overflowing with OLD PEOPLE. What happened to all of those young vibrant fighting men that I went to Korea with? I walked around, not really recognizing anyone. I found out that these folks were from C Company which was from nearby Hartselle, Alabama.

I decided to go to the far back corner to try to find someone from A Company or the Headquarters Company. A voice called out to me. It was former Lt. Dan Price and former Lt. Bo McIntyre, my former fellow platoon leader and company commander.

I joined them for extended conversations reminiscing about the old days and what has happened since. Bo had one of his sons with him. I saw that name tags were now being issued so I went up and got us all name tags and programs. It became easier to recognize people wearing name tags. There were lots of soft drinks, iced tea, peanuts and other goodies during the social hour.

I was saddened to hear that probably half of the 41 officers and warrant officers were now deceased. Besides Dan Price and Bo McIntyre, the only officers that I met were former Executive officer Major Cecil Chandler, Battalion pilot Lt. Lloyd Ward, and former Lt. John Lyle. There were lost of former sergeants corporals and enlisted men there. As a matter of fact these guys ran the entire show. Besides the officers mentioned, I was most happy to see Tommy and Pat Counts, Charles Riley, Gene Ratliff, Pat Baggett, Roy Laughmiller, Billy Williams, Dan Dobbs, Chick Sparkman and many more that I do not recall at the moment.

A fine buffet of World renown, Big Bob Gibson’s Barbecue with all of the trimmings including slaw, baked beans, potato salad, rolls and a variety of delicious pies were served up. Coffee and iced tea were there for the beverage. Tommy Counts arranged for me to join him, his wife Pat and Cecil Chandler at his table. The line started from the far end of the dining hall therefore about three hundred people were ahead of us. I was close enough to the serving table that I sneaked up and got my iced tea ahead of time so I would not have as many things to bring back to the table. There was nothing to be concerned about. There was ample food for all with seconds or thirds if desired. I chose barbecue pork instead of chicken because it would be easier to handle with plastic utensils. I also chose a coconut cream pie that was so delicious that I went back for seconds on that item.

There were lots of speeches. Tommy Counts and Mack Vinson presented a plaque to Cecil Chandler for outstanding leadership during the spring offensive in 1951. He had the guts to order A Company, that was in danger of being trapped by the Chinese, to Advance To The Rear. I was in that company and I really appreciate that decision. The Marines moved into the position that we vacated. Cecil was deeply moved by the award. A great man.

I feel very certain that there will not be another celebration by this group in twenty-five more years. Where have all the soldiers gone? Long time passing!!

Hello,

Today (July 26, 1998) my dad asked me if I could find some of his army
buddies. Seems someone told him you can find anything and anybody on the
internet. I of course told him I would try. So far I haven't gotten
very far.

He told me to look for the following:

1343rd Engineer Combat Battalion Hdq. Company 1952 - 1953

Please contact me with any info. He says he would like to either
set-up or at least attend a reunion of his buddies.

I can be reached at the following:
