Comments: Assisting a vet with a claim. Ernest Fencl was seen for a Knee injury in lat APR early May 1953. Was tagged at Div HQ Aid Station by H. (or W.) G. Fox on 4/30/53 that was being sent to 121st for Ortho consult 1 MAY. Any information anyone could find would be helpful. He has and is having problems with this knee--and although we have the referral paperwork, the VA is denying benefits because we don't have 121st papers to show what the injury actually turned out to be. Medic tagged it possible "torn medial cruciate ligament"--there is no such thing as a medial cruciate ligament. Any help appreciated.

I have a copy of a Form 8-27, dated 12 Oct. 1951, which lists "Wound, lacerated. Scalp. No A or N involved." What does the A and N stand for? Also, it says "LD yes." What does LD stand for? BTW, a Capt. Baker signed the vet's form, transfering him to the 171st. Evac Hosp.; may provide a memory or two from the past.

THANKS ALL FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICE!

Comments: Re 121st Med Evac: I am not sure now that I read histories of the helicopter evacs and aid stations in close to The Punchbowl(we were securng ridge and MSR Lnes above the Punchbowl) just how I got to the 121st in Yongdongpo.. but the doctor who worked onme- I understand only neurosurgeon in Korea but not sure of this. I think his name Moyers, a Major. I must have gotten to the 121st around dinner time and he complaine later when I came to, that I was still ruining his dinner every evening as he had to asperate my head as with no bone there in front wqould fill with fluids and be out like a full football and I could not rest at all. He said I had ruined his dinner when I got there too! I'm sorry and those officers after about 48 hours in a combat operation, they have to start paying for their meals--eneven if nothing but meat and beans, cold! Now I believe there were some enemies in that hospital; they kept aluminum or steel urinal "ducks" and bed pans out in snow banks I'll swear and when orienting the penis and duck were not gentle at all and damned thing right back to testicles.. no peepe for hours after taht!! When I got to USNH in Yokusuka the neurosurgeons there took one look at me and the work that Major did onme, sewed me right back up as nothing could be improved on and the job he had done was Five Star with 16 or 18 silver clamps on veins and arteries.. I am now almost 75 and I have certainly out lived the 10,000 insurance and flag thanks to that doctor and the 121st!! Thanks guys, my kids thank you too!! I may be mistaken re Moyers but if so, and he's still alive would like to tell him thanks and thanks again!!! By time I got cranioplasty with skin grafts, some bone and tantalum plates( a great job done in 1952 by Oak Knoll Navy-- it's hard to tell i was ever wounded except for loss of hearing and vision in rt eye and on rt side..100% SC disability by VA only 90% by Navy clinical board.. no seizures at all but used prophylactic for years until phenobarb backed up on me and I went almost nuts! Have been studied by Head injury studies at NIH, MIT etc..

Comments: My name is Kalani O'Sullivan and I'm writing this on behalf of Mr. Pyong-Hyan Choe (Johnny Choe) of the 8th SPS at Kunsan AB. Though this is not a Korean War incident, we hope that someone from the 121st Evac Hospital of 1961 may stop by and see this article and help us in our search.

He is searching for a Dr. Crawford (first name unknown), 121 Evac Hospital, Pupyong, March 61.

At that time Johnny was a "street kid" living a rough life after he left the orphanage in 1960. He also spoke "street English" and was able to communicate with the Americans. In 1960, he was outside the Kunsan Main Gate when he noticed a blind kid -- about 5 years older than himself -- was being pushed away repeated by the ROK guards in his attempts to enter the base. He went up to offer his help and found out that the kid had learned that an operation done free by the US Army that could return his sight. However, he must first receive a letter of recommendation from the nearest US military base. He had traveled a long way from Chongnu only to be rebuffed at the gate. Johnny the street-wise kid took him around to the North Gate and snuck under the fence (barbed wire strands at that time). He took him to see the Base Chaplain and pleaded Noh Chin-Woo's case and received a letter from the Chaplain and Base Hospital. However, because of the non-availability of eyes for transplants, there was a long waiting period. According to Mr. Choe, he offered one of his eyes and this act came to the attention of Dr. Crawford. He was stunned by this act of generosity and took action up the channels to make this a special case. Johnny didn't have to lose his eyesight as other "eye material" was used. On March 1961, Johnny was there when the bandages were removed from Mr. Noh's eyes and Johnny translated that he could see the 16 flourescent lights through the welder's glasses. The Doctor was overjoyed. Later Johnny accompanied Mr. Noh returned to his village and everyone was stunned to see the blind-boy now sighted. A celebration was immediately held for the miracle.

Mr. Noh is now 65 years old and lives in Chungno while Mr. Choe is 60 years old and resides in Kunsan City.

After all these years, Johnny would like to thank Dr. Crawford for his kindness and humanity.

In 63 when the war was over, the Korean kids were still picking up mines for scrap metal and we had several admitted to the 121. I recall going with our neuro surgeon who volunteerd at a Korean hosp. and was amazed to see on the TB unit that patients were sleeping 2 patients to a cot and they were using an old surgical light from the war and doing surgery on 2 patients at one time in the OR. Memories~~~I have so many. I have lost touch with all the people I knew while I was in Korea. One of my jobs as a nurse was going on the blood run each week. Two corpsmen and I were taken by chopper to a different outfit each week to get blood for the only blood bank we had in Korea.                                     I am sure your memories are not as pleasant as most of mine were. Comments: I was a patient Nov & Dec 1953 with Hemmoragic Fever. Most of the men who had it died there. I was one of the lucky ones. I could only eat 1 slice of toast & 1 cup of pear juice each meal.

Lost from 165 lbs to 125 lbs. When Thanksgiving came, I was served a full Turky Dinner. The staff knew I couldn't eat it. I laid there and cried because I knew the Army cared, and I was very thankful.

One night in December I did not have the usual high fever and the staff was elated. they said I was going to live. Later, I was flown to the hospital Tachakawa in Japan to gain weight.

By the first of February I was back at West Virginia University to resume my Sophomore year. I should have taken a semester off because I was still very weak. But I made it through and even went to summer school.

Comments: I was in Korea Jan - Sep, 1952 and last outfir was in the 696th Ordnance and sent to forward ammunition supply point from there. I was interested in knowing area the 696th was at. I know it was some distance North of Seoul and also the location of the forward ammunition point if possible.
