KENNETH P. WINTERS |
| DIANE WINTERS wrote on June 13, 2001 City and State: LAKESIDE CA Unit: CLEARING COMPANY, 120TH MEDICAL BATTALION Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Today I received (from the NCRP) copies of two (2) DD214 forms for my husband's uncle, Kenneth P. Winters. The earliest dated one states he entered the Army as a Pvt-1 on 15 July 1950 in Minneapolis, MN; went to Medical Field Service School in Ft. Sam Houston, TX Sept. - Nov. 1950 for the Operating Room Tech course; and was honorably discharged as a Cpl (T)22Apr53 on 15 July 1953 at the Reception Center in Ft. Lewis, WA. His "Most significant Duty Assignment" is stated as "Clr Company 120 Medical Battalion APO B6". Upon the unexpected death of my father-in-law this past December, we inherited Grandma Winters' old steamer trunk that held the few remnants of Uncle Kenny's short life. As I poured over several pictures he'd sent home to his parents, sporadic correspondence to and from the VA and attorneys handling his case, and his dogtags, my heart ached. My husband has few memories of his uncle but understood that he had been wounded by shrapnel to the brain that rendered him unable to care for himself for the remainder of his life. The Death Certificate dated March 23, 1974 states he died from internal hydrocephalis (water on the brain)and scar tissue from an old war wound. The medical investigator listed that the injury occurred in 1953 when his vehicle hit a land mine in Korea, Korean War. He was just 3 weeks shy of his 43rd birthday. I am hoping to find others that may have served with him that can share their memories to include in an album I have put together in his honor. No one that served their country with honor deserves to be 'lost' in an old trunk somewhere. I know this is a longshot, but maybe you might have known Uncle Kenny and can share some stories with us. The following names are from the photographs: Cpl. Smith, Pvt. Trisano-Mpls., Pvt. Johnson-Fergus Falls, Hines (patient that had both feet amputated due to 'frozen feet'), Ken Moore, bunker buddy Gene, Andy, Lee-Ambl. Driver, Ken-Ambl. Clerk, Jake Zarogian (standing by a door with lots of pin-up girl pictures on it), Leon Huen-Milwaukee, "Kentucky", Bobby Zimmerman- Maynard, MN. There is also a picture of an older, dark haired, full faced man, smoking a cigar that has "My NCO, officer in charge of all E. M. on hospital crew" written on back. Another is of a dark haired woman with glasses wearing a nurses uniform with "My Ward Officer. Nice but she likes to work too much." written on back of it. Other pictures include what appears to be a trench with "Home for a week" written on it; what looks like a view of the entrance to an underground bunker; and, most poignant of all... a photo of two young men that appear to be holding supplies with "Were pretty good men, mile 290 got them" written on back. Well, I truly appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Diane Winters Lakeside, CA Keywords: Cpl. Smith, Pvt. Trisano-Mpls., Pvt. | SANDY KEHM wrote on January 29, 2001 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FRIEND OF VETERAN Comments: My friend, Richard Waltner, has asked me to see if any of the people he served with in the Medics could contact him. You may e-mail me at the above address, and I will see that he receives all messages. Richard has recently published a book based on his letters to his then-fiance and records he kept during his time as a medic in Korea (1952-54). Richard enjoys excellent health and memory, and along with his desire to hear from old comrades, he wishes to try to keep the Korean War from becoming "The Forgotten War". | JACKSON MOORE wrote on November 28, 2000 City and State: ROSWELL GA Unit: CLEARING CO. 120TH MED. BN. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I don't recognize any of the names provided, but there were a lot of Thunderbirds over there. I joined the 45th right after my WWII discharge. Iwas in D Co., 180 Regt. When I trnsfrd from OBU to OU, in Norman, I joined the 120th Med.Bn. I was in the Cookson Hills on an archaeological dig when the 45th was activated. I was a BAMC-trained Medical Lab Tech. I worked in the clinic at Chitose with Patrick Dudley, Granville Northern and "Freddy" Suyama in the lab. When we traded places with the 1st. Cav. in Korea, the company divided into "receiving", "clearing" and "holding" stations that were several miles apart. I got hurt and was sent to Japan for recuperation and ultimate return to States. I missed out on the Chinese offensive of '52 while in the hospital and still feel ambivalent about it. I would like to hear from anybody who interacted with me as a friend, colleague, buddy, patient, even antagonist; or someone who knew one who was.
