Comments: I am looking for anyone who might know my uncle Lynn H. Kelly. He served in Korea in 1951-52. I am trying to piece together his service since his records were lost in the fire. His DD214 shows the 537th but I have been told they were not in Korea. He had a belt buckle that looks like he hand engraved "51-52 Korea Kelly 10th Engr "C" Bn". Any help would be appreciated!

Comments: ALL Former Sky Bridge Battalion Soldiers... - Some may remember me, I was the 10th EN Bn Executive Officer in 2002-2004 and corresponded with many of you, or put you in touch with soldiers in the unit during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. - I noticed the remark regarding deactivation of the 10th Engineer Battalionn in "March 2003". That is not correct... we were crossing the border of Iraq and on our way to Baghdad in Mar 2003. The unit actually did deactivate with the Army's modular restructuring efforts in Jun 2004... we were actually the first to test the concept during a National Training Cneter rotation in Mar 2004. The engineer companies became "permanent" or "organic" E Companies in the infantry/armor battalions that they had habitually supported in the past. The battalion HQ was converted to a Bigade Troops Battalion that consisted of a Signal Company, Military Police Company or Platoon, Military Intelligence Company and various other unique functional elements. Similar restructuring has been occurring over the past 3-years acrosss the Army as each division is restructured to the new modular Unit of Employment and Unit of Action structure... obviously these transitions have been affected by the Army's continuing experiences and force requirements in Iraq. - Now... I suspect the 10th Engineer Battalion's deactivation is short lived and if they are not already back, they will be soon. There are numerous modular engineer organizations included in the Army's new structure at UEx (onld Div) and UEy (old Corps/Army) levels and, given the 10th Engineer Battalion's battle history, it's pretty likely that one of those new elements will get the "Sky Bridge Battalion" colors. I'll make an attempt to find out where the 10th falls out in this plan and post an update in the future.

At end of tour was assigned HQ Co. Exec Officer under Lt. Fuller while waiting to rotate (delayed by point increase). Missed O.P. Harry. Spent weeks trying to camouflage road to OPLR but could not maintain it against mortar fire. Built roads and bunkers, operated a quarry, and supported 2nd Bn, 65th Inf Regt. Flood waters in July 1952 were a huge problem, but my platoon was outstanding keeping the roads open in our sector.

John Burgess wrote on 2002-11-10 12:44:35.0

Comments: In my spare time (don't have a lot), I have been slowly researching the history of the 10th Engineer Battalion. I was recently assigned to the battalion in June 2002 and have found little of the historical memorabilia that you usually find in a battalion.

As I read the comments of old soldiers that went before me... thought maybe they would like to know that the Sky Bridge battalion, named for the bridge they hung in the sky in Sicily during WW II, is still in action... supporting the Marne Division, now out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

We are currently deployed to Kuwait... on the front lines of freedom, just a short ride from the Iraqi border. Suffice it to say that if politics result in the balloon going up... we'll be riding squarely on top of it.

Today's combat engineer battalions in a heavy mechanized/armored division is aligned with an armored or infantry brigade on a habitual basis and we support the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, or "BCT", providing mobility and survivability support. We have three engineer companies - A Co Warriors, B Co Beast and, no C Co, but D Co Dawgs of War. We retained the D Co due to the presidential unit citation earned at Chosin. I recently learned that a battalion in Germany, that used to be the 10th Engineer Battalion was reflagged when the 3rd Division was moved from Germany to Fort Stewart... but even though the battalion was reflagged... the D Co that had to become C Co refused to drop the "Dawgs of War" motto and retain it still today.

As for our mission and operations in Kuwait... you can learn an awful lot from the following Web Site: www.globalsecurity.org. Check for Operation Desert Spring, or the U.S. Order of Battle under Target Iraq.

If any of you would like to write current soldiers in the battalion and share perspectives, you can write to through me...

MAJ John E. Burgess HHC, 10 EN Bn (NY Kabal) Operation DESERT SPRING APO AE 09303

Just put Name with "(10E-Korea)" in the return address and I'll know who it's from. They ended the "Any Soldier Mail" program for security and force protection reasons.

Take Care, Bridge the Sky! MAJ John Burgess Battalion Operations Officer burgessje@engineer.com

Comments: I have a picture made on troop ship as we were coming in to Japan, Fall of 1952. One of the men was named Crofoot ( or Crowfoot), he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. I believe he was from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One of the men pictured was named Brockman, he was a member of 5th RCT, had been wounded, was returning to duty.

I was on my way to the 3rd Infantry Division.

The picture was made by a man named Bander, or Bender or Binder.

I would love to hear from any or all of these men.

George Weiser wrote on 2001-07-08 18:32:08.0

Comments: I have only recently joined the 21st Century with access to the Internet. One of the first things I did was look up the Third Infantry Division and joined the Association. In the first edition of the Watch on the Rhine was Mike Slater's request for information from people who were involved in the battle for Outpost Harry. That triggered memories of things I haven't thought about for fifty years. I have had E-Mail correspondence with Mike and checked the internet for other sources that would refresh my memory. I was delighted to see Ray Anderson's account in this website, particularly mentioning the minefield that we placed on the front slope of the outpost. I was the Platoon Leader of the 1st Platoon of Co. B and the other members of the mine laying detail were volunteers from the platoon.

We practised the operation several times on similar terrain behind the MLR and returned to the hill that evening. When we returned we discovered that the 15th Regiment Company had been replaced by a Co. from the 5th RCT. The Co. Commander in charge had not been informed that we would be there and was somewhat surprised.

We had to wait for virtual darkness before venturing out on the exposed front slope. It was virtually covered with bodies and body parts. It was a problem to find soil to set a mine on. Each man had 18 mines that were successfully placed. We weren't detected or fired upon so no one was hurt in the operation. By the time we had finished laying the mines the fighting in the valley had broken out and we couldn't get off. So we stayed overnight and helped out where we could.

I would love to hear from anyone that was on the detail or who has first hand knowledge of it.

George Weiser

He was attached to the 10th Engineer Utilities Det. and 8030th Comp Svc Co. prior to the outbreak of hostilities. I am not positive what engineer battalion he was assigned to in Korea, but it looks like it may have been either the 10th or the 8th (1st Cav). My uncle told me that my father told him that he was at or near Chosin Reservoir in the winter of 1950. Most of his unit was wiped out. He also told my uncle that he received a medal or citation from the President of South Korea. One of his jobs was to lead tanks through mine fields. He was a carpenter mostly in bridge and road construction.

21 Nov. 1950 near Majon-ni, Korea.

There is a memorial to Him in the National Memorial Cemetery of the
Pacific,in Honolulu,Hawaii. The reason Iam looking for this info is
because there was no personal effects ever sent home.

The following is some info about Him: Corporal Charles LeRoy Somers,

My name is Ray Anderson and I'm a member of the Outpost Harry Assn.
and a former member of the 10th Combat Engr. Bn. My company, Baker
Company, supported the 15th Inf. Regt. Prior to the siege of Harry,
we had been on the outpost reinforcing the bunkers and enlarging the
trenches.

At that time most of the trenches were deep enough that you could walk
around the outpost without being seen. After the siege, the trenches
were blasted to a point that in some places you had to crawl your way
along the trench line. We went up on the outpost everyday during the
siege. It was mostly a clean up job as the trenches were littered with
dear Chinese Communist troops. They were also in the bunkers so we had
to make sure they were dead and then remove the bodies to make the
bunker operational.

During the night of June 13th. we sent a contingent of our guys up to
lay anti personal mines called foot mines out in front of Harry on the
slope leading to the Chinese outpost Star.

Lt. Geo. Weiser, one of the platoon leaders with the operation told me
later over a beer, that you either had to lay a mine on a body or move
a body in order to lay the mine. While on the outpost, this group got
caught as the outpost became surrounded. The engineers fought as
infantry the remainder of the night to repel the enemy along with the
5th RCT that were occupying the outpost.

Prior to the siege, a group of engineers led by 1st Lt. Frances X. Riley
& Lt. Alan Lichtenberg installed 55 gal. Drums of napalm out in front
of the outpost. This napalm was wired up to detonate upon the advance
of the enemy forces. It was used the first night of the siege and
helped in the defense of Harry.

In the case of my own squad and platoon, we lost two platoon leaders,
one serious wounded and the other KIA. My own squad was practically
decimated and I became the squad leader after only being in Korea for
about 2 months. If I can think of some more input, I'll send it along.

I now know what Unit My Unit was up against that 28-29 November 1950!!

It was the 172nd. Infantry Regiment of the 58th. Division CCF 20th.
Liberation Peoples Army. For a long time we had thought that We were up
against 10 CCF Divisions, now We know it was 12 Divisions and all the
Support Units.

The Numbers We had for Years was 15,000 UN Forces Marine,Army and 41
British Commando. to 120,000 CCF, Now We know it's more like 160,000 ?.
These 450,000 Liberations CCF Army had never knwo defeat! as with that
regiment that Tried to come over "East Hill" were stopped by an
Army Combat Engineer Company!!

Hagaru-ri on the 6th. of December was surrounded by more than 70,000 CCF
Combat Forces and We Broke out to Koto-ri 11 Miles South took us
from 6 AM the 6th Of December till 1900 Hrs the evening of the 7th. to
close in at Koto-ri. The big Enemy of both the Chinese and US! Was the
Severe Cold Weather that is now recorded at below 40 Degrees
below Zero. And We did not know about any Chill factor back then!
