Comments: My dad's name is DW Shelton. He was called "Shelly" by his friends. He was a corpral in C Co. He has forgot a lot of names, but he can remember Blankenship, Bob Turpster, Bob Waters and the medic that served with them was an American Indian named "Mohogany". He thinks his platoon sgt when he arrived was an American-Japinese, but he doesnt remember his name. He doesnt remember any of the places names, but he is hoping that someone may recognize his name and refresh his memory. He would enjoy hearing from anyone who was there and remembers him or those that he remembers.

George Weiser wrote on 2001-07-08 18:32:08.0
Comments: I have only recently joined the 21st Century with access to the Internet. One of the first things I did was look up the Third Infantry Division and joined the Association. In the first edition of the Watch on the Rhine was Mike Slater's request for information from people who were involved in the battle for Outpost Harry. That triggered memories of things I haven't thought about for fifty years. I have had E-Mail correspondence with Mike and checked the internet for other sources that would refresh my memory. I was delighted to see Ray Anderson's account in this website, particularly mentioning the minefield that we placed on the front slope of the outpost. I was the Platoon Leader of the 1st Platoon of Co. B and the other members of the mine laying detail were volunteers from the platoon.
We practised the operation several times on similar terrain behind the MLR and returned to the hill that evening. When we returned we discovered that the 15th Regiment Company had been replaced by a Co. from the 5th RCT. The Co. Commander in charge had not been informed that we would be there and was somewhat surprised.
We had to wait for virtual darkness before venturing out on the exposed front slope. It was virtually covered with bodies and body parts. It was a problem to find soil to set a mine on. Each man had 18 mines that were successfully placed. We weren't detected or fired upon so no one was hurt in the operation. By the time we had finished laying the mines the fighting in the valley had broken out and we couldn't get off. So we stayed overnight and helped out where we could.
I would love to hear from anyone that was on the detail or who has first hand knowledge of it.
George Weiser

Comments: My father was stationed at Camp Zama, Honshu, Japan prior to the Korean War. He was attached to the 10th Engineer Utilities Det. and 8030th Comp Svc Co. prior to the outbreak of hostilities. I am not positive what engineer battalion he was assigned to in Korea, but it looks like it may have been either the 10th or the 8th (1st Cav). My uncle told me that my father told him that he was at or near Chosin Reservoir in the winter of 1950. Most of his unit was wiped out. He also told my uncle that he received a medal or citation from the President of South Korea. One of his jobs was to lead tanks through mine fields. He was a carpenter mostly in bridge and road construction.

Iam looking for any info on my father who was reported missing in
action in Korea. He was last seen (according to a letter) on
21 Nov. 1950 near Majon-ni, Korea.
There is a memorial to Him in the National Memorial Cemetery of the
Pacific,in Honolulu,Hawaii. The reason Iam looking for this info is
because there was no personal effects ever sent home.
The following is some info about Him: Corporal Charles LeRoy Somers,
ER6147157,Corps of Engineers,Company "B" 10th Engineer (Combat)
Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division United States Army.
He was awarded the Silver Star.

My name is Ray Anderson and I'm a member of the Outpost Harry Assn.
and a former member of the 10th Combat Engr. Bn. My company, Baker
Company, supported the 15th Inf. Regt. Prior to the siege of Harry,
we had been on the outpost reinforcing the bunkers and enlarging the
trenches.
At that time most of the trenches were deep enough that you could walk
around the outpost without being seen. After the siege, the trenches
were blasted to a point that in some places you had to crawl your way
along the trench line. We went up on the outpost everyday during the
siege. It was mostly a clean up job as the trenches were littered with
dear Chinese Communist troops. They were also in the bunkers so we had
to make sure they were dead and then remove the bodies to make the
bunker operational.
During the night of June 13th. we sent a contingent of our guys up to
lay anti personal mines called foot mines out in front of Harry on the
slope leading to the Chinese outpost Star.
Lt. Geo. Weiser, one of the platoon leaders with the operation told me
later over a beer, that you either had to lay a mine on a body or move
a body in order to lay the mine. While on the outpost, this group got
caught as the outpost became surrounded. The engineers fought as
infantry the remainder of the night to repel the enemy along with the
5th RCT that were occupying the outpost.
Prior to the siege, a group of engineers led by 1st Lt. Frances X. Riley
& Lt. Alan Lichtenberg installed 55 gal. Drums of napalm out in front
of the outpost. This napalm was wired up to detonate upon the advance
of the enemy forces. It was used the first night of the siege and
helped in the defense of Harry.
In the case of my own squad and platoon, we lost two platoon leaders,
one serious wounded and the other KIA. My own squad was practically
decimated and I became the squad leader after only being in Korea for
about 2 months. If I can think of some more input, I'll send it along.

Chosin Reservoir history:
Ted,
I now know what Unit My Unit was up against that 28-29 November 1950!!
It was the 172nd. Infantry Regiment of the 58th. Division CCF 20th.
Liberation Peoples Army. For a long time we had thought that We were up
against 10 CCF Divisions, now We know it was 12 Divisions and all the
Support Units.
The Numbers We had for Years was 15,000 UN Forces Marine,Army and 41
British Commando. to 120,000 CCF, Now We know it's more like 160,000 ?.
These 450,000 Liberations CCF Army had never knwo defeat! as with that
regiment that Tried to come over "East Hill" were stopped by an
Army Combat Engineer Company!!
Hagaru-ri on the 6th. of December was surrounded by more than 70,000 CCF
Combat Forces and We Broke out to Koto-ri 11 Miles South took us
from 6 AM the 6th Of December till 1900 Hrs the evening of the 7th. to
close in at Koto-ri. The big Enemy of both the Chinese and US! Was the
Severe Cold Weather that is now recorded at below 40 Degrees
below Zero. And We did not know about any Chill factor back then!
