Comments: ALL Former Sky Bridge Battalion Soldiers... - Some may remember me, I was the 10th EN Bn Executive Officer in 2002-2004 and corresponded with many of you, or put you in touch with soldiers in the unit during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. - I noticed the remark regarding deactivation of the 10th Engineer Battalionn in "March 2003". That is not correct... we were crossing the border of Iraq and on our way to Baghdad in Mar 2003. The unit actually did deactivate with the Army's modular restructuring efforts in Jun 2004... we were actually the first to test the concept during a National Training Cneter rotation in Mar 2004. The engineer companies became "permanent" or "organic" E Companies in the infantry/armor battalions that they had habitually supported in the past. The battalion HQ was converted to a Bigade Troops Battalion that consisted of a Signal Company, Military Police Company or Platoon, Military Intelligence Company and various other unique functional elements. Similar restructuring has been occurring over the past 3-years acrosss the Army as each division is restructured to the new modular Unit of Employment and Unit of Action structure... obviously these transitions have been affected by the Army's continuing experiences and force requirements in Iraq. - Now... I suspect the 10th Engineer Battalion's deactivation is short lived and if they are not already back, they will be soon. There are numerous modular engineer organizations included in the Army's new structure at UEx (onld Div) and UEy (old Corps/Army) levels and, given the 10th Engineer Battalion's battle history, it's pretty likely that one of those new elements will get the "Sky Bridge Battalion" colors. I'll make an attempt to find out where the 10th falls out in this plan and post an update in the future.

Comments: Joined C Co. in January 1952, C.O. was Bill Helmig. Bn Commander was Major L. Kengel. Was 1st Lt platoon leader with Roger Bate, Frank Wolak, Fred Lancaster. Lts. Mueller, Caplinger also. At end of tour was assigned HQ Co. Exec Officer under Lt. Fuller while waiting to rotate (delayed by point increase). Missed O.P. Harry. Spent weeks trying to camouflage road to OPLR but could not maintain it against mortar fire. Built roads and bunkers, operated a quarry, and supported 2nd Bn, 65th Inf Regt. Flood waters in July 1952 were a huge problem, but my platoon was outstanding keeping the roads open in our sector.

Iam looking for any info on my father who was reported missing in
action in Korea. He was last seen (according to a letter) on
21 Nov. 1950 near Majon-ni, Korea.

There is a memorial to Him in the National Memorial Cemetery of the
Pacific,in Honolulu,Hawaii. The reason Iam looking for this info is
because there was no personal effects ever sent home.

The following is some info about Him: Corporal Charles LeRoy Somers,
ER6147157,Corps of Engineers,Company "B" 10th Engineer (Combat)

He was awarded the Silver Star.

My name is Ray Anderson and I'm a member of the Outpost Harry Assn.
and a former member of the 10th Combat Engr. Bn. My company, Baker
Company, supported the 15th Inf. Regt. Prior to the siege of Harry,
we had been on the outpost reinforcing the bunkers and enlarging the
trenches.

At that time most of the trenches were deep enough that you could walk
around the outpost without being seen. After the siege, the trenches
were blasted to a point that in some places you had to crawl your way
along the trench line. We went up on the outpost everyday during the
siege. It was mostly a clean up job as the trenches were littered with
dear Chinese Communist troops. They were also in the bunkers so we had
to make sure they were dead and then remove the bodies to make the
bunker operational.

During the night of June 13th. we sent a contingent of our guys up to
lay anti personal mines called foot mines out in front of Harry on the
slope leading to the Chinese outpost Star.

Lt. Geo. Weiser, one of the platoon leaders with the operation told me
later over a beer, that you either had to lay a mine on a body or move
a body in order to lay the mine. While on the outpost, this group got
caught as the outpost became surrounded. The engineers fought as
infantry the remainder of the night to repel the enemy along with the
5th RCT that were occupying the outpost.

Prior to the siege, a group of engineers led by 1st Lt. Frances X. Riley
& Lt. Alan Lichtenberg installed 55 gal. Drums of napalm out in front
of the outpost. This napalm was wired up to detonate upon the advance
of the enemy forces. It was used the first night of the siege and
helped in the defense of Harry.

In the case of my own squad and platoon, we lost two platoon leaders,
one serious wounded and the other KIA. My own squad was practically
decimated and I became the squad leader after only being in Korea for
about 2 months. If I can think of some more input, I'll send it along.

These 450,000 Liberations CCF Army had never knwo defeat! as with that
