She was a stand in for Betty Grable for the movie "Call Me Mister", which filmed exteriors in Tokyo in the Summer of 1950. ANYONE REMEMBER MY UNCLE - JACK REGAN? |
| CHRISTOPHER BOWNE wrote on June 20, 2008 CITY AND STATE: STONINGTON CT UNIT: 101ST SIGNAL BATTALION CHUCHON 52-53 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I just had , for the first time ever (I am 56 and my uncle is 78) had a talk with Jack Regan, originally from Mamaroneck, NY, about his Korean War service. Found out he was assigned to the 101st Signal Battalion at Chuchon between Nov 51 and Feb 53. Started out at HQ Company, main duty was jeep driver/messenger, then sent up work with 987th Field Artillery. Got reassigned back to HQ Company after getting stopped for speeding by some MPs in the middle of the night while on a jeep run - had the jeep flat out, came over the top of a hill on the road and these guys pulled him over. Really pissed him off as he was getting 6 rotation points per month while up at the 987th, got cut back to only 3 per month at HQ Company! After his discharge, Jack got a job with NY Telephone in Westchester County, NY. He was in the same line gang as my late father, Walter Bowne, then of Ardsley, NY. My dad, and my late mother Margaret fixed up Jack with my Aunt Florence Contant. Jack and Florence just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 19th. I am an amateur radio operator (callsign AJ1G), first licensed at age 14 in 1967,who got started in radio through the encouragement of my grandfather Arthur J Contant of Ardsley. My grandfather and father were, and Jack is, NY Tel Pioneers - all with over 30 years each with the phone company. My own telco career was limited to one summer hire period when I was in college in 1971, doing disconnect equipment pickup and new house construction prewire out of the the Greenburgh NY garage. My main interest in ham radio has been for the last 20 years or so, collecting, restoring and operating WW2 and later vintage military radio equipment, such as the AN/GRC-9 (Angry 9) and AN/GRC-19 (Angry 19) sets used in Korea, and later in Vietnam. Federalized on 19 Aug 1950 and shipped to Camp Gordon, Ga. I was part of Hq and Hq Company and served as the the Bn Parts Clerk in the Motor Pool under Capt Alan Brady (now deceased) and WO Bill Winstanley. From Georgia we went to Camp Stoneham in Calif where we shipped out on the Meigs for Yokohama and eventually were assigned to Camp McGill in Yokosuka, Japan. From there we went to Korea via Inchon and were assigned to IX Corps in Chunchon. Lt. Col William Norton was our commanding officer until he was relieved by a Major whose name escapes me. I remember CWO William McGuigan who had served with the 101st when it was stationed in Pearl Harbor in 1941--it may have been the 27 Signal Bn at that time and later re-named the 101st, 'tho I'm not sure. Would welcome correspondence from anyon who served during the time periods mentioned above and hopefully my fading memory will recollect. |
