Regional Scale Maps of Korea

The L551 Series

Enclosed is a graphic index to the L551 series of topographic maps of Korea published by the U.S. Army Map Service (now the Defense Mapping Agency). These maps date from the era of the Korean War, and are useful for studying the geography of fairly large areas. At a scale of 1:250,000, one inch on these maps represents a distance of approximately four miles. They include a considerable number of place names, but not nearly as many as the larger scale L75 1 series described below.

Large Scale Maps of Korea

The L751 Series - 1:50,000

South - Taegu, Pusan, Naktong Bulge

DMZ - Seoul, Chunchon, Panmunjom, 38th Parallel, Heartbreak Ridge, Punchbowl, Bloody Angle, Chorwon Valley

North - Wonsam, Chosin Reservoir, Yalu, Kunu-ri

Far North - Along the Russian border.

"The L751 series of topographic maps of Korea was published by the U.S. Army Map Service during the Korean War. They were produced at a scale of 1:50,000, with one inch representing roughly five-sixths of a mile, and with grid squares shown a 1,000 meter intervals. The maps were used for planning and conducting local operations during the war, and are among the most detailed series of maps of Korea available in the Geography and Map Division. They show native settlements and urban areas, place names, roads, airfields, vegetation, drainage, boundaries, elevation, and relief by contours."

"Full size, black-and-white Xerox copies of the sheets may be purchased from the Photoduplication Service, Library of Congress, 101 Independence Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C. 20540-4570. Orders may be submitted by surface mail; by email at
photoduplication@loc.gov; or by fax at 202/707-1771. The cost will be $5.00 per linear foot, plus charges for packaging and shipping. Each sheet requires 1.5 linear feet to reproduce. When requesting copies, please identify the maps by their series designation (Korea - L751) and the appropriate sheet number(s). Shipping and handling rates are listed on the Photoduplication Service website at http://lcweb.loc.gov/preserv/pds/order.html#shipping."

"The Photoduplication Service can also scan the sheets in the L751 series, and from the resulting Tiff file produce a digital color inkjet print. Scans cost $45 each. Color inkjet prints (no wider than 36") subsequently generated from the Tiff file cost $20.00 per linear foot, plus packaging and shipping charges. The Tiff file can also be placed on a CD or FTP, and then used to generate a color print from a local network printer or by a commercial printer. If researchers have already identified the materials the wish to have scanned, and know the cost of having them scanned, they can use the 'Photographic Order Form' on the Photoduplication website at
http://lcweb.loc.gov/preserv/pds/pdsform.html.

In the row labeled "Type of Photographic Prints,' patrons should check 'Other,' and enter "digital color scan." Under 'Item Identification' they should identify and describe materials in the manner noted above for ordering black-and-white photocopies."

"Return the order with your remittance directly to the Photoduplication Service, Library of Congress, 101 Independence Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C., 20540-4570; and allow roughly four to six weeks from the date that payment is received for the order to be processed, completed, and mailed out. If you would like to pay by credit card, the order may be faxed to 202/707-1771; or emailed to
photoduplication@loc.gov . "

Inquiries regarding the status of orders may be directed by telephone at 202/707-5640; by fax; or by email."
