Korea aboard the USS Virgo. We supplied ammo to the front
lines and also to many, many other ships. The Virgo was in
he war almost all the time. I remember going ashore to the
front lines providing ammo limits prior to an attack on the
enemy. Cold beyond belief as I was wet from spray while
going ashore on he LCVM. Found a duck "DUCK" and was
warmed a little by he engine. I remember the sand bag
emplacements and the little sand bag hole in the side where
the leaders could hide during attacks. Yes, we all deserve
all the medals and a lot more. Korean veterans were almost
if not totally forgotten. It has been a long, long time
ago.

The original message appears to have fallen off the thread here. The medal is the KSM or Korean Service Medal which is from the Republic of Korea.

Most ceremonies stopped in late 2003 and I don't really know anyone who has been actively presenting the award. Many Korean business groups or churches present those in person. For a long time the Randolph AFB in San Antonio was supplying the medals.

The link on their site no longer features the KSM.

Looking for anyone who may have known my grandfather. He was in the US Navy and was aboard the USS Marquette. He was a Korean and WWII veteran. He passed away in 2005 and i'd love to see any pictures or anything from his time of service. I have two young sons that adored their great grandfather. I have nothing to show them of my grandfathers service to our country...only precious memories of stories I was told. His name was Edward Earl McIntyre (Big Daddy). I'd love to hear from anyone at all that knew him. Thanks so much

Click on Ted Barker's name for information about obtaining the medal issued by the Korean government.

To find out what other medals you may have earned, get replacement medals, update your records, or to get medals and records of deceased family members is easy.  You will need a copy of Standard Form 180 which you can google to get, and a COPY, not the original, of your DD214.   Mail the form 180 and copy of your DD214 to:

National Personnel Record CenterBureau of Naval PersonnelLiason Office Room 54099700 Page Ave.   St Louis, MO  63132-5100.  It will take three to six months for a reply. If you do not have a DD214 available, enter the social security number. I was quite surprised when I did this a couple of years ago and learned that I qualified for the Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and ROK PUC.  They will send you replacement medals one time.

I would like to receive this medal on behalf of my father, now deceased. He was CM3 LeRoy E. Slupe that served in the Navy from 1951-1954. He served on the minesweeper, USS Redstart during the Korean conflict. He was extremely proud of his service and the men he served with as we are of all that serve.

Whoever posted the original thread topic did not post the medal details. It is the Korean War Service Medal awarded by the Republic of Korea - KSM

We moved the original details off our site some time ago.

Here is the link to the Randolph AFB information section.

The link discusses who qualifies and how to get it.

I just found this site today. I am guessing that all of the questions about the medal refer to the Korean Medal given to Korean Vets by Korea June, 2000 (with a Letter of Appreciation from Kim Dae-jung, President of the Repiblic of Korea dtd 25 June 2000). If there are still questions about accessing this medal let me know and I will share info. that I have. Warren, U. S. Navy 1952-55.

My father served on the USS DeHaven and was a EM3 and captains barber from 1943 to November 1945. Up until 2 days ago, I believe he was the oldest living seaman. Frank Bonilla. He was 95. would have been 96 in two months! He had good memories of the Navy and all that he served with. He was very proud of his granddaughter who is now in the Navy Reserves in Great Lakes Illinois. I read on his discharge papers that he recieved 5 stars from the Asiatic-Pacific and 1 from the Phillippine Liberation. Also the Victory medal. As long as he was alive I have never seen them. I don't know that he ever got them. Anybody know how to find out? I appreciate any info you can give me.It would mean alot to my family. Thank you.

Ms Snider,

Read you e mail about the medal.Briefly, I was first told about the medal by a person in our congressman's
office. the other contact was through the american legion. This person was located at the veterans hospital. At any rate I beleive they should be able to guide you..It has taken about 50 years before the U.S. decided to issue the medal on behalf of the Korean
government. Hopefully I have helped you. I'm still trying to get the medals my father earned in ww1..

Good Luck

I spent 3 1/2 years aboard the USS Hamiltom County, LST 802 which was involved in the prisoner exchange that I believe was called "Operation Big Switch." My service period was March '52 to March '56. Spent two trips from Long Beach to the Japan section, and to Korea. I think it's a crying shame we veterans of that era don't get the recognition and appreciation that we deserve. I've been trying to find out what ever happened to the 802 If any-one has any info.
