We were with the 4th Missile Command in 1961, we had a
pretty rough time, we rolled with the Honest John Rocket and
I was the only Teletype Repairman in a 45 mi. circuit for 14
months, I went TDY to several different camps. I had my own
little jeep and my .30 cal carbine, and my tool kit and I
rode the back roads along the DMZ, Camp Page's back door
opens to the DMZ. I was 17 years old, and when I could I
ran that jeep. The only problem I had was the road signs,
and most all the roads went to Seoul, sorta reminded me
where I grew up, Damascus, Va. We used to run the roads the
CC boys built during the 2nd World War. This was nothing
new to me. You ask me if I had ammo., no I shot septic
pencils! The only other Medal I figure we should have got
was a UN Medal, and a Medal from Korea, and another Medal
from the State in which we lived, and may I ask WHY NOT????
I am 70 years old and I have enjoyed my life, and the VA has
been outstanding for my Med's and they saved my life, Hats
off to the VA., and to conclude, may God Bless us Troops!,
and the Troops serving this fine Nation under God in which
we live.

I am looking for a Brigadier General who was commanding
officer of this large field exercise. I was assigned to
8th Army TDY from 38th (ADA) Artillery Brigade (4/44th)
Headquarters Battery and 4th Battalion Headquarters. The
TDY involved a large field exercise that included 82th
Airborne jump along with, as I recall, units from 2nd ID,
maybe 7th ID and I Corps, not sure who all was there.
Anyone else know about this large exercise. I was the
driver, RTO and classified documents clerk for Brigadier
General (I don't recall his name, I need his name). In fact
I still have my log book of radio conversations I have
during the exercise. The log books I was able to retain
are dated starting 19 Mar 1969. I really don't recall how
long the exercise last or where it was exactly. As I
recall, it was pretty far north. This is very important. I
was subjected to a defoliant exposure and the physical
results are now very active in my body. I have been going
back and forth with the VA since 2008. My claim has been
denied, my appeal has been denied. I just need more proof.

If this is about the Korea Defense Service Medal, here are
the details for getting it. I got mine a couple of years
ago, but had to wait about six months to receive it. I
only learned that I qualified for it when I ordered my
records from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC).

There was no certificate or anything included in my
records. The NPRC just sent me a note saying I qualified
for it. They are shipped from Philadelphia, and you will
only receive the medal without any certificate.

I had already received an Awards Case Number since the NPRC
ordered it for me. You can request the award by emailing
the NPRC at: http://vetrecs.archives.gov and specify the
award(s) you are entitled to.

year 2013. I was told from the Veterans Care that they would
send me Dads medals and I never got them. My father served
in the Korean War and I would love to have his medals. His
records were burnt in a fire and his bag was stolen as well
from the hospital. It is a shame that our government did not
have all this on record as my father fought for years for
his disability through the VA and was turned down. I will
continue his story as I promised him I would. Please if
anyone knows of this medal that they are talking about here
please contact me at the email listed above. I thank you.

I can't find the original entry. Deserve which medal?

My father Robert P. Caragher fought in Heartbreak Ridge, Chosin and was WIA at
Chipyong-Ni. 2nd Div, 23rd Infantry, HQ Co 1st Battalion.

He rec's the Purple Heart, Bronze Star (twice) Hand-to-Hand-Combat and Korean
service Medal.

It seems he should have a separate medal for those who fought at Chopyong-Ni.
His original medals were stolen with everything else in his two years in the
hospital in Battle Creek, MI. Who would DO that?!

He re-applied for his medals and patches, but mentioned something was
missing. His DD214 states the above mentioned medals only.

Many thanks for info on this topic.

Laura Caragher Polonsky. Proud daughter of a Veteran. Thank you ALL for your
brave service.

did anyone serve with a canadian who joined the us army prior to the police action in korea, 1949 abouts. story goes he forged his sisters birth certificate (she was born in michigan, my dad in ontario, he enlisted under age, they found out sent him home from boot camp & my grandmother & his priest had to sign off so he could go back. his intention was a fast track to a skilled trade. apparently after boot camp he was sent to Korea, celebrated his 18th birthday in a tokyo hospital (shot in the leg) he never talked about it. spent 3 years there, newspaper clipping, purple heart, wolfhounds, & he was a radioman.

i know its not much but with the loss of all records in the VA fire its as if he was never there. just wish i could explain to his grandchildren the mans man that i new.

ANYONE WHO ATTENDED THE IMIJIN SCOUT training school or did OP duty at OP Dort or was there when (what should have been my patrol) were massacred on 3 Nov 1966, I would appreciate hearing from very much. My nickname by many was the 'happy bomber' I still am trying to put the puzzle together - I was missing for a period of time and was dumped at the 121st Evac. and have never had full memory of all of it only glimpses sometimes - I know I tried to go over and take out that loud speaker that we had to listen to every night and the traitor Jenkins giving out names and my came out on speaker one night an all I wanted was to take him and it out. My patrol in Oct 1966 caught a small NKA group off in minefield below OP Dort and shot them up - only leaving a blood trail that we were not allowed to follow. ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS, Sgt.David E Rizer

He would really love to have them back but that is not an option as they have been gone for over 30 years. To all who wish to inquire about U.S. Army Korean Medals, there are now two additional (retroactive) new medals available to veterans. If you served during the Korean War, you are eligible for the Korean War Service Medal. However, if you served at anytime after the war to the present, you are eligible for the Korean Defense Service Medal. To get these medals, please write to: National Personnel Records Center, Medals Section, 9700 Page Blvd., St Louis, MO 63132-5100. You can find information on the requirements for these medals at www.gruntsmilitary.com Seems like a pretty easy process and we were happy with the results for my Dad who fought in the Korean War and also did his last tour of duty there in 1971. Good Luck.

I served in Korea '69 to'70 and spent considerable amount of time along the DMZ and those that served in Korea at anytime should be awarded a special recognition due to the
fact a state of war has existed from 1950 to the present and only fragile truce keeps a tense the situation from erupting. From time to time there is some venting by the North With deadly results.

I wonder if my deceased Father-in-law qualifies for this Medal, so that my husband can receive it.

Okay now I will attempt to make a long story short, first explaining the situation and then giving the information that I have on my husband’s Dad. My husband’s Father passed away in 1958, when my husband was 6 months old… All we know of my father-in-law is what is contained in a small photo album and his wallet, his death was so tragic that my Mother-in-law had a nervous break down and won’t speak of him. Fortunately my Mother-in-law saw fit 7 years ago to dig out the photo album and his wallet to give to us. We have no one to ask about him, my Mother-in-law didn’t keep in touch with his friends or family.

Luckily we do have some paper money from Korea in the photo album (so he most likely served in Korea) and some information contained in his wallet about his service, I am working right now on getting his death certificate so I can find his birth certificate and then with his parents names I can hopefully seek out any remaining family members.

Now with this all said, I am currently trying to pull up any information I can on him, his friends, family anyone he knew from the war and through my many searches online I have stumbled across this thread about the Medal and I figured might as well see if he qualifies and in the mean time see if anyone out there knew him as well.

Please forgive me for being long winded, as I don’t know what all this information means, as of yet and what information may possibly ring a bell with someone.

Here is the information that I have found in his wallet:

Richard L. Lockwood (same name as my husband who is Jr.)
Born: 01-30-32 (according to his drivers license and his information on my husband’s birth Certificate)
Born in: Tulsa, Oklahoma

It gets confusing here:

He has 2 cards from after the his service…

one typed up (blanks filled in typing) and very plain looking says:
C-number: 19 535 988
Service Serial Number: (a line going through just before this number, not sure if it had a letter or number before this) 18 407 211
Date of Claim: 3 5 56 Type: 10-2731
War: P128 Type Disch: Hon. Br Service: Army Active Duty: 8/7/51
Date Disch’d: 3/15/52
Date of Birth: 1 3 32 (missing the 0 on the day?) Place of Birth: Tulsa, Okla. Rank: E5 Race: (blank, we believe he was part American Indian)
Sex: M
Signature: Marlin A. Kelly
Title: Chief Administrative Division

The Second (very official looking complete with raised seal):

Certificate of Service
Armed Forces of the United States
This is to certify that
Richard L Lockwood RA 18 407 211
Private Regular Army
Honorable Served on Active Duty in the
Army of the United States
(looks like the fine print below says: DD Form 217A 1 Jan 50)
ON the back it says:
Period of Active Duty
From: 7 August 1951
To: 15, March 1952
Signature and typed name and Grade: C. J. Barry Jr, Colonel, AGC

And one more Military Card:
Standby Reserve Notice of Availability
His name then, Standby Reserve No. or Selective Service No. 34 75 33 181 has been determined to be: Available
By: local board
Date of mailing: Jun 25 1957
ON the back:
Local Board No. 75, Tulsa County
(Address) Tulsa 3, Oklahoma

Indecently he had a GOLO (Government Organizations Labor Only) Card in his wallet from Denver, CO in his wallet too… and has his wife’s signature on it (they were married in 1953) so he must have continued working for the Government in one way, shape or form? And just in case someone may know this person… In their wedding photo there is a guy in what looks like an Air Force Uniform standing next to the bride, groom and maid of honor… a signature on the Certificate of Marriage has a witness signature that looks like Ernest H. Nicholas… a friend?

Well, sorry this was so long but I am trying to get all the information out about him… if anyone knows how and where to go to apply for any medals for him, any information at all about him or anyone who knew him… please feel free to contact us through my email address or our home address.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Lockwood Jr.
12613 Zuni St. #104

Thank you for any help you can give me,
Mariah Lockwood

my dad served in Korea 51-53 and he hates to even talk about it, although he'd love to contact some of his friends that served with him. Train whistles blowing and the freezing are his worst memories, I believe. Wish I could find some of his friends but I'm having a really hard time. He got his medal and yea I feel like it was well deserved.
Thanks for the time, Sharon

I was with the 185th Engineer Combat Bn. Co B (Battling Baker)from Dec. 1951 to January 1953, served as supply sgt. we were always 35 miles north of the 38th parellel. There were no road signs or town names, we maintained the 'bug out' road to the east, and the road up to Heartbreak. We had minefields all around us, they actually kept us safe. Every night we heard the artillary, ours and theirs, firing at each other. Most of our casualties came from mines, or ambushes from North Koreans that came thru the lines at night. I just have gotten ON LINE, and am interested in this medal if I qualify. When I was drafted I lived in Chicago, but now I live in Oconomowoc WI. Let me know if there is further action I should take.
